The "strictly music business" achievements of Prince

I'm trying to make a list of stand-out and/or revolutionaries achievements attained by The Man.
Please leave artistic prowesses aside,
just notable stuff from a "10% show / 90% business" perspective.

1. Having simultaneously the #1 movie, album, single
2. Being the first artist selling his music online
3. Getting a #1 in the Top 200 by exploiting an unseen default in Billboard's me-tho-do-lo-gee!
4. Getting a #1 single through a small independent label while under legal battle with his official label
5. Getting an Oscar and the "Best Album" AMA for the same record

Possibly, but TBC...

- the first artist's website to propose chat sessions ?

I'm sure I'm missing a bunch.

While not revolutionary, the fact that he occupied the #1 (Kiss) and #2 (Manic Monday) slots in the Billboard chart in 1986 was certainly a stand-out achievement. Prince was the fifth songwriter to ever manage to do that. Even better, A Love Bizarre was #99 at the same time after spending 23 weeks on the chart.

What am I going to say might not be a #1 anywhere, but Prince wrote for numerous other artists, irregardless of genre. He offered music to Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Celine Dion, Chaka Khan, The Bangles, Patrice Rushen, Stevie Nicks, Madonna, and on and on and on. He was so prolific and although I am sure he had an ego, it didn't consume him ... He had such a generous and creative heart that I don't think he could hold it all for himself.

Darling Nikki directly led to Mary "Tipper" Gore establishing The Parents Music Resource Center, which went on to slap parental advisory stickers on records.

In the "Filthy Fifteen" list they published in 1985, Prince holds the honour of being placed 1st and 2nd. It's interesting that Vanity also appears at number 4. Good to see the Mary Jane Girls made the list, too.

1 Prince - Darling Nikki (sex, masturbation)

2 Sheena Easton - Sugar Walls (sex)

3 Judas Priest - Eat Me Alive (sex)

4 Vanity - Strap on Robbie Baby (sex)

5 Mötley Crüe - Bastard (violence)

6 AC/DC - Let Me Put My Love Into You (sex)

7 Twisted Sister - We're Not Gonna Take It (violence)

8 Madonna - Dress You Up (sex)

9 W.A.S.P. - Animal (Fuck Like A Beast) (sex)

10 Def Leppard - High 'n Dry (drug and alcohol use)

11 Mercyful Fate - Into The Coven (occult)

12 Black Sabbath - Trashed (drug and alcohol use)

13 Mary Jane Girls - In My House (sex)

14 Venom - Possessed (occult)

15 Cyndi Lauper - She-Bop (sex, masturbation)

Yup. He was described as having a very strong ego. But he also had a huge heart. When you have both a high self-esteem and compassion you can do a lot in this world.

What was the number one song he had while in battle with WB?

How about right from the start with his initial WB contract deal and producing himself? I think fleshed out this is a list that could stretch to 20 or so innovative music business aspects of his career, with many industry firsts.

I love it. I always figure the captain of a race boat.
Nothing to do with body size.

Sorry, but this is my world too. I don't see why I have to explain or justify the fact
that I am pro-Prince every single time.

If my style is such you can't read between the lines,
if, when I rant, you just focus on the rant and not what's underneath,

well, fair enough.

But I think I have the right to like the nickname, despite the fact he supposedly "hated" it.
It's not like Prince never said everything and its opposite.
It reminds of Prince's adolescence, when the initial fire sparked.

What can possibly be wrong with that.
But feel free to ask for a sticky that list the names the orgers are allowed to use
without hurting this fucking getting-on-my-nerves politically correct self-censoring spirit
that seem to permeate every internet discussion, not only on the Org.

I'm all for respect.
And calling him SKipper to me is a form a respect.
He's a fregate races winner.
He's my Captain.
I'll read my Vanillascope® any day.

He is the youngest ever (I believe it still stands) to self produce, compose and play all the instruments on a debut major label album.

Pretty amazing when you think of the thousands of albums that have been released since 1978.

The greatest soundtrack ever made in Purple Rain
The greatest concert film ever made in Sign O The Times.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

And that one of the tracks on Cyndi's album of that year was a Prince track... ('When You Were Mine') - so P was involved in some way in 4 of the 'implicated' albums, lol!

Interesting info. However, a straight out "strictly music business" rule breaker for OP. Sex (and especially dickx) are out - period. So sex & business are bedfellows, shocking evillol evillol evillol

You might find something by shifting through this....

http://prn-archive.net/ a list of concerts and appearences

And then regarding Protogues ?

Is there anyone who came close to mentoring as many other musicians as he did.

How many people has he given music lessons to by taking them under his wings ?

Why do you continually refer to him as Skipper? Yes, I know all about the nickname but you weren't his pal back then. It smacks of disrespect. Or is it to show how "in-the-know" you are? It's snarky and really not appropriate for someone who claims to be a fan.

Please correct me if I'm wrong; my understanding is that he was the first black artist to cross over from R&B and get airtime on MTV. He attracted a very diverse fan group (age, race, gender, nationality, sexual orientation) for 35 years.
