Mountains, the song and video

I like Mountains. One of my favourite tracks off the Parade album. Psycedelic and funky. Doesn't sound dated really.

With the video, at first I didn't really like it, thought it was boring. But then watched it again and saw that Prince pulls some killer moves. Plus Lisa and Wendy looked cute.

Great song (Mountains) that deserved to get more exposure. Prince obviously was fond of the song as he brought it back into live sets around 2010-2012.

There was a rehearsal footage on YouTube of this song, better than the video IMO

nothing sounds dated on that album. Transcends time still

Mountains stood out 2 me at first listen, and I knew that one would have an extended version.

Such a joyful song

Oh, come on. The lin drum stands out like dog's balls next to any song released a couple of years after and onwards.

That may be one of the most fascinating recordings of Prince ever. I love those "fly on the wall" moments.

You said "nothing sounds dated on that album". I pointed out that the use of the linn drum is dated, as a result, if you play Mountains next to any song released this year, it does, indeed sound very dated.

It doesn't sound dated still, very timeless album of music I enjoy like a Spring road trip

I listen 2 Marvin Gayes What's Going On album and Joni Mitchells Court & Spark and they have such a timeless expression 4 me just like Parade

I was fascinated with "Mountains" when it came on radio. I used to record music from the radio onto cassettes (as most of us did back then). I had a catalog of music over my high school years. Almost 36 tapes. I called them Hot Hits. I couldn't record "Mountains" fast enough to listen to over and over. I had no idea what half of the lyrics were. I loved the echoed clap on the 2-and. I thought it was so unusual and interesting. Plus it's mostly in one chord the whole time (like "Hello" and "America"), so that was interesting to me as well.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

A lot of music sounds the same today.. similar tempo, beats, sounds, etc. Mountains is like a breath of fresh air. When Doves Cry used a Linn drummachine and that song can go up against any other, anytime. In certain cases, perhaps dated = differrent.

Exactly, specially if you play it loud.

Nothing about Mountains sound like anything even remotely out today. And it doesn't particularly sound like anything I've heard non-Prince from around that time either. That whole CD is so hip it's crazy.

One of his best songs! The video is great: love it when he's just sitting on the carpet.

Mountains and Kiss are both my favorite jams on the album.

Didn't someone here go so far as to mak the case that "Mountains" was the last great song he ever wrote?

.

Great song, though arguably a poor choice as a single. Not a strong enough hook to grab the radio-listening public's fancy, hence it's relatively weak charting (U.S., not sure what it did in UK offhand). Not a reflection on the song's inherent quality, of course.

Even Bobby mentioned how "Girls and Boys" should have been a single instead of "Anotherloverholenyohead". G&B was a single a month later, because it seemed to gain more attention as the b-side, than the a-side itself. G&B should have hit right after "Kiss" in the single releases. "Mountains" could have been later, because I do think it sort of stalled the momentum of "Kiss" being a #1.
