And honestly, beyond the rare album like the single "lotusflow3r" sophistication is something he threw out the window. Whether it was he didn't care that much anymore, medical issues or drug abuse, it's pretty clear something major happened after the 80's for his music as a whole with exceptions to sound so half-ass. It's an obvious blatant undeniable thing thing that happened to his recorded albums. [Edited 10/19/16 7:32am] You still didn't point out what you think is amateurish. Actually "Beginning Endlessly' is great, professional with a creative concept behind the production, where he is taking the demo vibe of Dirty Mind all the way to a progressive barebones clarity. I think the production is excellent, from the dryness which makes it fresh to the clear attitude of not hiding the core elements with an almost thorny in your face attitude. It's completely there and strong. I think you're fooled by Lotusflow3r because it has the exact same production style outside of the effects heavy layered vamping on 2 or 3 tracks. Are you getting wrapped up in reverb? If you take a track from the 80's like Let's Go Crazy and simply went back to the raw tracks minus the reverb, echo, and flange, I think you would be surprised by how simple it really is. I'm guessing if he had used more conventional 80's style sweetening effects on any track from 20ten you would have liked it better. I loved when he really started to release some tracks in this dry bare bones minimal style, especially in the Npgmc days. It was like he was trying to make the musical ideas naked and certainly it was not a conservative attitude. He took this attitude live as well by performing a song like 'the beautiful ones' on tv with a dry lead vocal. It was like a dare. He was always trying to push his sound to what he felt was progressive and different from the mixing trend even if his 'genre' idea was conventional or touching upon popular cliches. That's your opinion, I love Prince and he is a genius, but all the millions of fans who stopped buying his albums and and with higher standards where it comes to music beg to differ. A great sound, like much of his 80s work. Specifically love how the percussion, synths, and vocal delivery play off of each other. 76th [Edited 10/19/16 13:24pm]

Again your opinion. But it's a fact that his older work stands the test of time while his newer work doesn't and never will.

Enjoyable but cheesy. It's a great track, but the production really does ruin it to a great sense. Tracks like this is where it would have been cool if he had great studio people in there with him. It's lazy in many ways. He really did need help and not kids he had under his wing.

The "art" of production is what I'm talking about, the same way a lot of great music was produced by young people in their basement with rudimentary equipment and techniques. There is a difference. Better brushes and an expensive canvas and paint by a pro does not automatically make better art than someone talented kid with chalk on a sidewalk [Edited 10/19/16 13:36pm]

I bet it could be measured that Prince in the 80's was supported by a huge teenage fanbase that then dropped off sharply after Purple Rain.
Have you tried to test a newer Prince recording with an old one on someone who has heard neither in their time of release?
Maybe some of the current teenage fans could speak up about their reactions.

You're barking up the wrong tree. Critics and fans alike all rate the his early work as among the best albums ever recorded. No one but a handful of fanatics here think otherwise. I'm not saying all of his later work is all bad, some of it is very good. But there is a sharp devide, a sharp and sudden decline in his work starting in 88. Why such a dramatic and sudden decline is the biggest mystery in pop music. It was as dramatic in decline as on-off switch. I've always felt it had to do with drugs as such changes in people's work is a cliche for drug users. And his passing from a drug overdose gives that scenario more credence.

[Edited 10/19/16 12:05pm] This statement & your "drugs" statement below are horrific. Sales aren't everything - I suppose you like & respect the work of Justin Bieber & the like if that's what you believe. Ugh I'm betting all mega-artists experience a dip in sales once they hit superstardom, no one stays on top forever. Doesn't make him any less of a great songwriter & amazing musician.
