Musicology era I love this era, music and look wise. I even got to go to the tour And couldn't believe I got a free copy of the cd, played the album on the way back home. Anybody else love this era?

IMO, Prince got everything right on Musicology album/tour/era. He played the game, and played it very well. Plus, none of its brilliance was bogged down by any typical "weirdness" (You know what I mean. Some examples: Lovesexy album cover, SOTT failure to tour US, unpronounceable album title, etc.) Now please don't jump all over me, I love Prince's quirkiness and appreciate his whole body of work (Lovesexy is my favorite album). But 2004 was a huge year for him with the 20th Anniversary of Purple Rain, his Grammy Awards performance and Rock n Roll Hall of Fame induction. Musicology had to be excecuted just right with no glitches, and I think it was. Even the NPGMC was running as a real site with cool merchandise and a ton of downloads available. Then only controversy may have been with the CD giveaway and how those were accounted for album sales. But Prince got his way and it was a brilliant way of marketing his new music, building the price into tickets. He was the last artist allowed to do that too, as Billboard no longer allows it. He failed to tour the world with this show. People here in europe who never were into prince or hadn't bought an album after Purple Rain were all excited again for prince because of the good marketing campaign for the album, the grammy awards performance, etc... They all wanted to see him live here in europe, but he wasn't willing to tour the world.

That's was a good time to be a Prince fan. But you have a good point about the world tour. It's too bad that he shutdown the NPGMC.com music download store not too long after the album. I was looking forward to Bataclan being released as suggested on the single. "Love & honesty, peace & harmony"

Lots if his tours missed the US, but Musicology did a great full tour in the US but missed the rest of the world. you liked the look? interesting, most of the people here raked him over the coals for what they called pimp suits.

. I thought the CD was so bad, even getting it for free felt like a rip off. Worst album of his entire career. . Great live show though!

I had row 2 floor seats in the round in Dallas. That was my most enjoyable Prince concert ever. Loved the band, setlist, and presentation. He was absolutely on point during this tour. (Insert something clever here)

i enjoyed all the shows i saw on this tour. i only like 4 songs on the cd. i didn't like the wardrobe or the hair. this was the last time i saw him in person( down the hall and then across the room).* those suits, or at least the jackets, were grossly oversized with big 80's shoulder pads. like that beige suit he wore on the tonight show. ridiculous! they made him look even smaller in person, like his head was 10x larger than his body and just sitting on top a stuffed suit. not. a. favorite. look.
/// he smelled more like powdery incense than colonge. almost woodsy. [Edited 10/18/16 15:15pm] Prince #MUSICIANICONLEGEND

Great tour...loved the "musicology" concept and band. Check out the short documentary on YouTube about the tour...rare backstage stuff and a side to P that is not usually seen. His Bass solo clip on this Doc is devastatingly good (Stanley Clarke)...wish I knew where to get the full solo. Also, the sound checks were killer.

2004 was an amazing year. A great comeback. Nice memories. Still hoping for an official dvd of the tour. I heard some Detroit shows were pro shot. Is that true?

That was an amazing time. Even though the album was meh for me the concert and whole vibe was just so loud and positive. Plus IMO best rendition of DMSR, When Doves Cry (tie with the 1984 bday show) and Life O The Party during this tour Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

Are you talking about the clip with P dancing around (quite well) in the dressing room and singing Black Sweat in an funny and over the top funky way. Oh wait a minute, I just realized that I said he sang Black Sweat in 2004. Is that possible?
I love musicology. I like his 2000's work more than most people do. I actually didnt think I would like that album becuase of some of the bad reviews on this site, but I liked it and it turns out most critics liked it as well.

Strange - I always group Musicology / 3121 / Planet Earth together as a trilogy of sorts. . Not sure how Chocolate Invasion and Slaughterhouse fit in there but those three albums definitely are of a piece to me.
