As a fan, I don't listen to the covers. I suggest you do the same. The sad truth is the vast majority of even the music-loving public will never bother to explore Prince's work. I don't think banning Purple Rain is going to make a difference.

I think it's great that so many artists have stepped up to pay tribute in some way. And plenty of artists have demonstrated themselves more than capable of doing justice to Prince's music.

No, I wasn't directing this at all fans. I actually agree with you. Prince's music belongs to the world. It would be a great shame if his work wasn't reinterpreted by other artists. It's just that for me, I prefer to avoid any covers at the moment. It might be that I feel too personally connected to the originals.

True I have friends digging and coming back to me with this song and that song they are discovering personal attatchments to. one of my friends is big time in love with "Insatiable" even sung the whole thing to me over the phone LOL!!! You just never know.

That said, the point of a well-performed cover is to not try to be like the original artist.

I would tend to agree that those who try to replicate the arrangement of the original (like with note-for-note attempts to play the same solos, mimicing vocal inflections etc) tend to be uninspired.

I think the absolutely best tribute was the one performed at half time at the Vikings game last month (Sept). It was only a few minutes long, but it was heart felt and deeply emotional. I still get choked up watching it.

If anything else is going to be done it would be great to see a documentary style tribute with excerpts of Prince talking/singing and someone talking about him and his art. But please no more celebrities singing his songs as a tribute.

Oh, just to add...I would like to see Judith Hill sing The Cross though. I heard she sang it at the Official Tribute.
