No More Tributes

Please...enough of this Elvis-style nostalgia trip. No more tributes lead by artists with very little connection to Prince. Ban Purple Rain.

Prince was too important of a genius to not explore his entire real and vital musical catalog/vault/history. There has never been another dead genuis with the wealth of riches unknown to the music loving public.

I understand the legal complications, but fans must demand this and not settle for another annoying rendition of Purple Rain.

Frank Zappa might have had something to say about that.

As a fan, I don't listen to the covers. I suggest you do the same. The sad truth is the vast majority of even the music-loving public will never bother to explore Prince's work. I don't think banning Purple Rain is going to make a difference.

I realize you weren't advising me, but if you meant this in general terms directed at all fans...

.

I try to listen to as many covers as I can. Some are good, some are bad. Some are great, some are terrible.

.

I think it's great that so many artists have stepped up to pay tribute in some way. And plenty of artists have demonstrated themselves more than capable of doing justice to Prince's music.

.

To each their own of course, but it does Prince's music and legacy no harm to have other folks playing his work.

.

Even "Purple Rain" - BK Jackson knocked it outta the park with his rendition at the FAMU commencement ceremony earlier this year.

No, I wasn't directing this at all fans. I actually agree with you. Prince's music belongs to the world. It would be a great shame if his work wasn't reinterpreted by other artists. It's just that for me, I prefer to avoid any covers at the moment. It might be that I feel too personally connected to the originals.

In a way I agree. I dont think think the are many people who can do covers of his songs justice but that is probably due to my bias that nobody's like him, period. Tributes in the future should be more a party type celebration where all of his actual music is played and music that wasn't played on the radio is what people get exposed to.

Which the tributes do not change.

.

It's not just mainstream artists paying tribute to him anyway.

.

I say the more the merrier - it's all well-intentioned and if it helps expose more people to P's music and legacy, all the better.

I agree there's no one like him.

.

That said, the point of a well-performed cover is to not try to be like the original artist.

.

I would tend to agree that those who try to replicate the arrangement of the original (like with note-for-note attempts to play the same solos, mimicing vocal inflections etc) tend to be uninspired.

I have a cursory knowledge of Zappa's musical legacy. Does it live on through new and rare music or is it the nostalgia circuit? I think Prince's unheard or unknown music is vital and fresh and could be successfully marketed for years.

The tributes in general I haven't really looked at. But the ones of the people who worked with him giving their all I have loved every minute of it. Fantasic memories.

I think the absolutely best tribute was the one performed at half time at the Vikings game last month (Sept). It was only a few minutes long, but it was heart felt and deeply emotional. I still get choked up watching it.

.

If anything else is going to be done it would be great to see a documentary style tribute with excerpts of Prince talking/singing and someone talking about him and his art. But please no more celebrities singing his songs as a tribute.

I agree that one was beautiful, in part due to its simplicity. I'm sort of over these tributes as well. I would love to see tributes that involve prince himself - perhaps a montage of interviews and performances edited for clarity and substance and impact. That would be more interesting at this point.

Oh, just to add...I would like to see Judith Hill sing The Cross though. I heard she sang it at the Official Tribute.

I'm also beginning to think that Tupac will still be releasing albums when I'm 90.
