Prince on "Ellen" Bambi (2004?) Rehersal footage??

NOT ASKING OR OFFERING, just want info....

When Prince performed "Bambi" on Ellen, 2004 I think??? Prince and the band did a pre-show run thru of the songs-sound check. Is this video circulating? Cuz I know it exists in at least one fans hands. Source was an "Ellen" studio employee. Just wanted to know if this got circulated to the fans, or if the only copy is sitting in a box nearby?

BTW, no "Contorversy" lyrics were sung, but a bit of the music was incorporarted into the jam of "I Feel For You".

Is this 2004 or 2009 footage?

Looking at the footage of Ellen and the audience, did the use of Bambi seem to offend anyone or are they kind of in on the irony of the song? It occurred to me that in the 2004 interview, Ellen called Prince sexy. Perhaps, using Bambi was partly a humorous reference to her calling him sexy and she was in on it. As if Prince was jokingly saying "I know you want me".

I finally found this DVD! Was beginning to think I imagined the whole thing.

Watched most of it earlier today. The live performance does not fade out with the credits like the broadcast version. Prince continues to play the medley of "I Feel For You" (with parts of Controversy, A Love Bizarre, etc.) then goes into a fantastic performance of "Bambi". He does a bit more of an instrumental jam, and repeats "I can't stop!" a few times, and then yells "Stop!" and ends the set. The audience cheers for a while asking for an encore. Prince finally comes out and thanks the audience and Ellen, looks like he is thinking about doing another song, but does not, and leaves the stage. Ellen gets on the mic and thanks everyone for being a great audience.

Next cut is the video footage of the soundcheck from earlier in the day before the show. Very relaxed run through of the songs, with Prince occassionally asking for more in the monitors here and there. The DVD started to freeze up at this point and I'm not sure if it is the DVD or the player. I will try a few different players and see if the problem persists.

Video quality is great, except it is standard definition playing on my big Hi Def TV.

This is definitely in-house footage from the Ellen show, and the Ellen logo is visible in the lower left corner throughout. Amazing.

I can't imagine that this wasn't Prince having fun with Ellen and that she didn't enjoy it in the same spirit. I remember, in that same interview where she called him sexy, that she had brought her copies of his early albums with her. She was a long-time fan.

As for the rest of the audience, I'd say that Bambi isn't a terribly well-known song as far as the average American is concerned. If you knew it already, you were in on the joke and probably liked Prince to begin with. If you hadn't heard it before, would you really be able to listen to all of the words, process them, and be offended? Probably not. I don't know about the version on Ellen, but there's a live version with 3rdEyeGirl out there that I heard; I'd be hard-pressed to understand many of the words if I didn't already know it. You'd probably just be grooving along to the music.

I'm so happy for the OP who found this. An almost three year search? Wow! I hope it pops up somewhere along the way. I just watched the Jay Leno soundcheck last night, and I found it very interesting and enjoyable. It was kind of fascinating to watch Prince when he was in more of a working mode and to see him and his band iron out wrinkles. (Toss the hat? Nah, it doesn't work. Okay, how about just hang it on the mike stand this time? Yeah, that's good.). Then watching him really turn it on for the broadcast was fun. Enjoy your video!

The camera pan to Ellen numerous times through the performances. She is having the time of her life. She has the biggest smile and look of excitement. Prince is clearly enjoying the moment as well. Very playful vibe.
