Prince and the Godfather

Prince got the chance to do alot of music with people he himself admired (Miles Davis,Mavis Staples,George Clinton,Chaka Khan,Ron wood) Its always been known of his James Brown influence I've always wondered why they both didn't collaborate before JB passed away. any thoughts or anyone else that would've liked to have heard a prince/James Brown track?

Supposedly he wrote Possessed for James but he turned it down.

This is an interesting topic! I was just watching come youtube vids and was wondering why Prince and Little Richard never teamed up and collaborated as well! I would have loved to have seen that matchup!

May have been the title lol. May explain why Prince never released it.He did perform it live though.I would certainly think they will include it on the upcoming PR deluxe but that was Prince to put a song in a movie but never release it.smile

I forgot about Possessed being offered to him James Brown turning it down may have bruised Prince's ego if your idol passes on your song.James Brown with the career he had probably thought who is this young kid trying to give me a tune to record would have loved to have actually seen and heard JB perform it.

It's a good guess considering the origin of the name "Appolonia" for Patricia Kotero in Prince lore, as well as his samples from the movie on Madhouse 8.

There is the 'Paisley Park' / Purple Mix of Aretha & James' 1989 duet 'Gimme Your Love':

Not quite a direct collaboration but the closest we've got.

Me too. Guns 'n Roses played The Godfather Theme during their tour in '91/'92.
Slash did a great job on his Gibson and it would've even sounded better if P would have done it.

It's the first time I hear Possessed was ever offered to JB, what's the source?

I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere (Uptown Mag?) that Chocolate was offered and turned down in 1986, but there's no mention of it on Princevault so IDK. Anyone can corroborate this?

I don't know about P's ego's being bruised if JB refused any of those 2 songs, but it's clear that Prince wanted to prove something when he remixed Gimme Your Love: he absolutely killed it! The original is quite lame and generic sounding and Prince, most likely to both honor the 2 legends he was remixing AND to impress Brown (if not to show him he was funkier than him at that point in both their careers) did more than a mere remix, he practically reinvented the track, turning it into a 10 minutes killer jam with amazing horns.

James Brown was an ass so I don't see the both of them really getting along.
any thoughts or anyone else that would've liked to have heard a prince/James Brown track?
If you exclude Gimme Your Love because it was a remix, and imagine a proper collaboration (though Prince would more often work from a distance and rarely share the studio with peers: see how he "collaborated" with Miles, Stevie, Madonna, Kate, George or Mavis, so it's not so far from him remixing Gimme Your Love), it may have been disappointing. I've noticed that 1 + 1 geniuses working together often don't make 2. For some reason it's often that when 2 superpowers try to find a middle ground, the result is a little bland by comparison to both artists' solo works. I'm not sure why. It's not a rule, but it happens often.

I remember him rating MJ more. It seems weird coz most people if not all in the music world wouldn't put MJ above prince. Also you'd think he'd see mj as a bit lightweight in comparison. Having said that this was 84 maybe he got to see more of prince.
He also said prince was too profane. Which I found odd because even though jb wasn't crude he was very sexually charged

I believe this story about Possesed came from the book Possessed or DMSR but the story has been around for a while.

Jill Jones already explained what happend here. Just Prince not being prepared to be on the stage as Jill said they were drinking in the limo over to the show. Not the big deal it has been made out to be.

So I think he more than made up for it later. According to Jill the people in the audience were white people wearing polyester suits. I doubt anything he did was going was to win that crowd over.

Yes he did blow it but he still was a human being. When I saw it I was embarrassed for him but I still loved him regardless. A long discussion could be made about this:) Micheal imo was always intimated and jealous of Prince in the 80's when I first watched it and I see Micheal whisper to James about Prince being in the audience I laughed thinking here goes Micheal turning it into a dance off lol.micheal like I've said before was a great entertainer Thriller touched the world but he was never the total artist Prince was and I think Prince knew he wasnt. The footage is historical in the fact that it exists.

eek

I'm one of the few who have never seen any of the Godfather movies. I had no idea there was a character named Apollonia in that film.

I always thought he got it from the bible: Acts 17:1

I read he was inspired by the character, and her topless scene is mirrored in Purple Rain with their topless scene.
