Out of all the illnesses, why AIDS? Why did U yourself actually post, you thought it was AIDS? With all my knowledge about AIDS then, I never thought it was about a physical illness. Even the nature of Computer Blue, when you read the movie script 'expressing the Prince is going down on himself'

Because AIDS affects the immune system. Perhaps not exactly an autoimmune disease, but still. The wooh is on the one!

That is a good question. Little Girl Wendy's Parade was changed to Christopher Tracy's Parade. The reference to Tracy in SISIA could have been changed to fit the movie (like Anna waiting was changed to Vicki Waiting for the Batman movie). The wooh is on the one!

I think the homoeroticism of the song, the theme of a male loved one passing and the time in which it was released all lead naturally to such a conclusion. The song is sung by a man, about another man. In 1986 AIDS was primarily known as something that affected gay men, and was not too much earlier than this referred to as 'gay cancer'. The civil war lyric, whilst completely open to interpretation also fits this idea; an internal battle [of the immune system]. . Again, this is to a listener without knowledge of the movie and how the song fits the characters within. It was probably completely unintentional, but I certainly don't think the homoeroticism of the song was unnoticed by Prince as he always liked to flirt with people's perceptions and even in a song like this I think he knew some people would get the wrong impression and he liked provoking that kind of reaction in listeners as way of testing his audience.

I definately picked up a flirting of homoeroticism 4 me even back then I was very conscious of Prince's twin/Gemini thing, dualities of individuals I always saw it as him singing to himself

It's great. Hysterical actually. I can't help but LOL everytime I see it no matter how many times I see it. It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN

Yes that is what I thought too - he broke a heel and then "damn - now I get my white pants all dirty" Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

Yeah, that's a good angle too. I've never thought of that. If you think about the movie, the singer of the song is surely... Tricky? So I think I prefer your theory!

I believe I'm correct in sayiing, when the song was premiered live at the Masquerade Ball, Prince said to Jerome 'you wrote it'

I think people mistake the uncanny ability of Prince to fully embody his feminine side for homosexuality, even platonic.

The AIDS or drugs thing was a common interpretation back in the 80s. Perhapz some of you young'uns dont remember but AIDs was kinda a big deal in the 80s

Homoerotic =/= homosexual. . The song being sung by a man, about a man is what makes it homoerotic, even if that was never the iintention. Even if the song was sung explicitly from the POV of Mary Sharon, this would still stand - it's more about the listeners experience, than the intentioned meaning of the writer.

. Perfectly stated. . The great thing about this song is that it not only works perfectly well if you forget about the movie entirely, it actually works better. The song is so much more universal than the film. . And I say that despite my undying love for the movie, which is among my favorites of all time.

a common interpretation by fans of Prince or people listening to this song?

Stigmas of that nature still influence the outlook and spending of many, particularly by those who had a role in making the press and money related decisions (including him), that's why.
Clearly he didn't want to be the AIDS awareness (or any other disease's) poster child/ambassador in his remaining time.
Same like he seemingly didn't want to adopt kids when he couldn't have them.
Can't public figures make these choices too?!
Anyway, Roll Call for anyone else who isn't bowled over by this song and/or can separate the death date and weather fixation from some of his other work that deserves more discussion than this song. Yay!

Everybody sees/hears something different in inkblots/song lyrics depending on their personalities — their life experience — their education — their imagination — their … Just like nobody's intepretation of the amorphous splotches on this page can be claimed as THEE definitive explanation, no fan's intepretation of Prince song's lyrics is The One And Only Definitive Explanation™.
