What do Prince fans think of hip-hop culture?

I like The Roots, for example, but find that hip-hop culture has become littered with 'show' acts (especially now that the genre is ruling the mainstream).

On a related subject, why do Prince fans tend to diss Tony M. so visciously? Is it because Tony is considered a bad rapper, or that the majority of the hardcore just do not like hip-hop?

Maybe, it's because the Graffiti Bridge - Diamonds & Pearls - prince era is considered weak in context to Prince's body of work? I actually think this is an excellent period for Prince personally, artistically and commercially.

By the way, I've always assumed it's Tony that gets punched in Jughead but that doesn't make sense if you listen to the verbal sparring at the end of the song.

Not then, I didn't. I've always thought Tony M. brought something funky to Prince's studio repertoire.

Most fans I have come across fail to appreciate him, because they don't particularly enjoy that genre of music i.e. hip-hop.

True, but I also imagine the vast majority of the Tony M haters just do not like hip-hop, or rap, per se.

I think they are the 'inert,' ruling majority and most likely, would not want to hear Prince mix with any rappers, ol' skool or not.

Anji, Doug E. Fresh is a great old school rapper and got much love from those in attendance at Prince's concerts. Personally I don't think Tony could rap, besides he was a threat to Prince. He is tall and is a better looking black man but still can't dance as good as the Kid. lol

Animal Kingdom was one of my least favourite songs from The Truth but I've since revisited it and it is surprisingly moving. The Truth album really needs a 'proper' thread and it should be discussed in depth there. By the way, that album is nothing short of brilliant...

He's taller, more athletic and probably pulled more women whilst he was with Prince, than Prince did. What say you?

If neither were in the spotlight, I imagine the unbiased, female (and male) majority would prefer to shag Tony, rather than Prince.

I think Prince utilised Tony in a better way than he did with Doug E. Of course, Doug E. is the better rapper but his spots always seemed like 'add ons,' as opposed to really fused with the music. The same applies to Chuck D. and is possibly related to the fact that both Doug E. and Chuck D. are respected artists in their own right, and Prince couldn't really expect them to mould to his own vision.

Why don't we be fair and show a pic of each. That way we can be fair judges? nod

That's not a fair trial because you will all superimpose the 'ideals' you place upon both of them because of their celebrity.

A fair trial would most likely rate Tony as the better looking man; I think he would be deemed more attractive by a non-biased, general public.

I'm sure someone will but that's not a fair trial because you will all superimpose the 'ideals' you place upon both of them because of their celebrity. A fair trial would most likely rate Tony as the better looking man, he would be deemed more attractive in popular media.

hrmph this is true unfortunately. Some people will be like that. I would be honest. nod And not go along with what everyone else thinks or says. People have to be more into what they really think or feel on topics then following others. Oh well. shrug

Tony M did not sound good when he rapped live. His rapping was decent on record/cd. The Sacrifice Of Victor video has an aftershow in a small European night club and Tony raps live. Oh man, he was just awful.

True dat...Tony rapping live was more like Tony yelling live and that is what a lot of rappers do in concert YELL... But I am not like most P fans that diss him...I always liked how he fit into the group at the time...the dance routines were hella cool IMO...I like how he'd flip P over in the Nude Show for Partyman or that funky helicopter dance...they had some great coreography goin on...
