Beware the new vinyl reissue of Lotusflower and MPLSoUND

Many people on the Steve Hoffman crazy audiophile forum have reported that their new vinyl reissue of Lotus and MPlShit have the same music on sides B and D. In other words, the flip side of MPlShit is just the flip side of Lotus again. Well, I received my much-delayed order from Amazon today and it has this problem. WTF.

That's weird. There was a mispressing with the original vinyl release as well:

I've received mine from amazon.co.uk 10 days ago but found the first disc to be badly pressed, with dicoloured vinyl and distortion noise in some spots.

So I asked for a replacement and didn't even bother to check the second disc.

3 days ago I got another copy and immediately I saw disc 1 was again badly pressed. This one has a massive warp, some discolouration and the destortion noise in a few different places.

Only now I got to check disc 2 of each Album and both of them have side B again instead of D!

I have another replacement on the way - I fear with the same issue.

A lot of vinyl these days gets pressed so badly.

Not really. Things like what are described here are quite rare.

Okay, that's good. Never had any problems myself, but I figured with so much demand for vinyl now, there'd be a few hickups...

Maybe having the wrong side pressed is fairly rare but bad pressings are very common these days.

A lot of the new vinyl is badly made.

I had two Rhino reissues of Dirty Mind, both warped, one so badly the neddle jumped.

I got The US and European originals, they are still completely flat.

I bought this last year in Europe and I had no issue. I have another thread on the forum today, and have had issues with Parade re-issue. Having the wrong side on a vinyl is pretty critical. I work in Process Quality and unfortunately businesses are missing the point on quality in this short-term age we live in.

Quality is making sure the output is what the customer wants and getting it right first time with no rework. In this case, there is no excuse. This should never have made it out the door. There are major flaws in the production process. Flabbergasted, I am. I guess with so much demand for vinyl, they might need to re-hire some retired production managers to stop this type of thing happening.

It's all about cheap production costs these days. Demming proved that companies focusing on Quality brought costs down, those who focused on cost over quality ended up driving up their costs in the long term. You pay in the end for lack of quality in your processes and products. And people wonder why horse meat ended up in beef burgers?

lol not horesmeat!!! LOL

Yes. I paid $35 bux for this album. Now Im not sure how they will get me a replacement. its already rare as it is. I mean they are some of the best songs on disc 2. Its alright i'm not tripping over it though as I already had the album on CD and have an extra one...and I dont even listen to mplsound that much, I only wanted it for the lotus vinyl

this is where I got mine last september in France. I gave up on amazon as they cancelled my original pre-order and then said it wasn't available. Check them out, they may deliver for a cost to the US (I am assuming maybe incorrectly you live there - $35 smile). I think Prince made a deal with Because Records in France for this one. The only error is one of the songs titles is misprinted. The main attraction plays and has the correct sides on each record.

p.s. I love that word - record....

Amazon France may also be an option. You can use Google translate if you can't read french smile. I ordered my copy a few months ago from there when my local Amazon cancelled my pre-order and told me it was unavailable. confused

Just received my THIRD copy from amazon.co.uk - exactly the same issue!

I spoke to amazon and painstakingly explained to them what the problem is.

They now pulled it from their site to review the situation.

I had a closer look and saw that although side D and B have the same content they look different.

On side D the grooves are much more pronounced, you can see each song seperated from each other much more than on any of the other sides.

It also has a different etching in the run out. It even says B2 but crossed out and then D2.

It must be a different master of Side B for some reason.

Having listened to all these different copies it is so shocking how badly they are made.

All of them have these brief scratching noises in different parts.

It would be nice to have the album on decent vinyl but I also fear that these are cheaply mastered from the CDs. Also each record is almost 50 minutes long which is almost too long to have on a decent single LP.

I will now wait and see if amazon is getting a new batch....

Mine is fine. Although, just noticed on the back cover of the record it lists "Better With Time" as "Better With Me". Otherwise, plays perfectly fine on all sides...

When I was buying new records in the 80s/90s I never had any issues or bad pressings like that.

I bought well over 500 records then, not a single one was badly made.

Now I buy a lot of original vinyl from the 60s and 70s, they might be scratched but no pressing faults. I'm sure there are less pressing plants now and they definitely try to save cost. A CD is a lot cheaper to produce.

There is a faint scratchy noise at the start of 4ever, right under "If I never...",

there is also one at the start of Colonized Mind and to a lesser degree on Crimson.

Also in between Love Like Jazz and 77 Beverly Park there was a really bad one under the reverb guitar. All copies had that in those places but some slightly stronger.

If you don't listen properly you might miss it but it's there.

If you're copy doesn't have that you're lucky, I had it on 3.

Does anyone know who to contact to try to get a copy that actually has a Side D? This sucks. My replacement from Amazon has two Side Bs again.

My copy does not have this issue, thankfully. I didn't get it from Amazon, got it from an online record store that was mentioned in the original Prince vinyl sticky as having it in stock.

Crazy! I also see that scratch off for side B. Somebody knew things were messed up and thought they were corrected.

Because Music:

Tel: 01 53 21 53 21

Fax: 1 : 01 53 20 02 40

Thats the best I could find from discogs. I called Electric Fetus they were willing to offer replacement said they had a couple returned and could offer a refund....meh guess i'll live with it
