Always mytifying to me why When You Were Mine wasn't released as a US single. That is one terrific pop song with smash hit written all over it.

I was confused when this record came out, I was a kid back then but remember being shocked at the different changes in sight and sound of him, from when I first saw him in the IWBYL days. To my young mind, watching him was like a dangerous thrill. He appeared more sexual (although I really didn't have a clue what sexuality was back) then and the music sounded different from before. From what I could see he wasn't singing in falsetto anymore and was now doing rock music. . My taste in music was strictly RnB/soul and lovers rock at the time and I could not get my head around this guy who I had become intrigued about changing. What compounded my confusion was that I could not define him like other artists. 36 years later I have a better understanding of him and his music but apart from the obvious superlatives I still can't fully define him. Maybe that was part of his genius, that he wanted to keep us thinking and to never pigeon hole him. Anyway ramble over, DM is a great album which has become one of my favourites. I will play Uptown loud as hell tomorrow in his honour Come now, isn't life a little better with a pair of good shoes? - Prince 1985

Oh my God it is too, we are really showing our age now as well. Still great, daring and funky it was the album that led people to declare he was a individual and a genius in music and he had the sound to define the 80s. . Also Controversy is coming up to its 35th anniversary! . 2016 is the year of anniversaries, 35 for Contoroversy, 30 for Parade, 25 for Diamonds and Pearls, 20 for Emancipation, 15 for Rainbow children, 10 for 3121, I mean wow! Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Never really noticed it before but i'm listening to this album and thinking Gotta Broken Heart Again could easily have fitted on the Prince or For You albums, and that GBHA and Donna sound kinda similar. Does anyone know if they are related? Come now, isn't life a little better with a pair of good shoes? - Prince 1985

It's approaching middle age - does that mean we can expect to start seeing it dressing provocatively, acting wild? .

An erotic masterpiece, the album that proved he was so much more than an R and B crowd pleaser and hit maker. He went from following the trends to elaping ahead of them. Plus it was pure sex all the way through, at the age of 22, Prince reached his true humpa humpa stage that would propel him through this, Controversy and 1999, as some of the most semenal music ever made. Best of all was that he did not give a flying fuck, his mind was free and open and lacked all of the judgemental dogmatic Jehovah nonsense of his middle age. . Dirty Mind opens with a Dirty Mind, great synths and sexy falsetto open to an increasingly randy Prince singing about sex in cars, the open air and virtually any where, he is running around impregnating everybody, its all about rampant carnality. When u were mine is a beautiful rockabilly style ballad, the girl was a minx, a tart and a two timer, yet he loves her more and misses here after leaving nothing but releases on his bedsheets! . Do it all night, is more sex, but super funky and I love his coquettishness - don't get shocked. Gotta a broken heart again is another she left me ballad. Maybe she got sick of having sex in the open air, a a car and all night? . Uptown is a gem, it is the manifesto of how openminded he was and it is just great. The JW prince would not recognise it. Head is rather x rated, but hilarious, great synths and sexy falsetto Sister is a bit daft, yet he says motherfucker twice and talks about incest, but it is a lesser track here. Partyup, the Morris Day anti war anthem is a sound closer with funk and fun included. . The album is a classic, awesome synths, guitars and a creamy falsetto all the wya through complete with the raw home studio feel, this is organic music, and its truly nasty. Easily one of his finest albums and his best out of the first 3, Controversy was almost as good and is Dirty Mind Part 2, Part 3 of Dirty Mind is 1999. I go to town on Controversy in another thread, but it was Dirty Mind and Controversy that got me from a hooked fan to a obsessive one, there is so much sex and mystique oozing out of this era. Prince was a sexual libertine, oozing lust, funk and also common sense, if you listen to Uptown, Partyup and the serious tracks on Controversy. Prince also had a heart and even better, was things only got better. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I don't consider Sister a lesser track at all, to me is a great sort of punk song.
