UTCM is silly fun. I never thought of it any more than just that...silly fun. It's a fun movie with good music and silly characters. It's not meant to be any more than that, and it succeeds. IT's the equivalent to ATWIAD as far as expectations were concerned. It was the followup to Purple Rain and had a lot to live up to. So it was never going to be well-received. But again, as a silly/funny movie with a simple story and good music...it succeeds. And it's crazy stylish to boot.

.

As for GB? That was supposed to be serious. This was Prince forcing a spiritual angle that just failed. Musically, it's cool, and had it been released as a mere video/movie/straight to video releae, ala, 3 Chains of Gold, I would have been much more cool with it. As a major release, it's just not good. The acting is more wooden than PR, the direction i all over the place. The sets are cartoonish and look out of place. The acting and comedy suffer from the 'Housparty' vibe of the Hudlin brothers at the time and add to the 'forced' feel of the movie.

I maintain, the best thing that can be done for this movie is to add a post credit 'easter egg' taken from Purple Rain. Once the credits roll and the screen fades to black. You get that scene where the kid wakes up in his basement and begins to clean up the mess he had made with his father's music sheets. This would imply that GB was nothing more than a dream.

There’s nothing strange, we’re not deranged

GB is literally one of the worst movies ever put on film.....and I love virtually everything P ever did in his career. It was just bad. However, there is some tremendous music that came from that era and I am grateful for that.

UTCM was fun, quirky and worthy of a feature length film. Great music.

The writer of this article has some very strong points: finally someone who sees UTCM as it was intended. Just a funny movie which was intended to have some moments with overacting and silly scenes. It was/is pure fun and it shows that P knew how to tell a story. GB has never been my fave as a movie, but reading a remark about Madonna who turned down the script makes me laugh out loud: just take a look at the movies she played in...
The writer however should either get his facts straight regarding Jerome. He refers to him as 'Jerome Bentley'..? Or he should check the auto-correction on his computer device.
For the rest a good article that hopefully makes people look at those movies in the way they were intended.
