Music posted on the web - your thoughts What are your thoughts on P's music (released, unreleased, concert footage) being posted on the web and available to all to download for no payment. Do we assume all of it is unauthorised? Some posters state that all rights are reserved by the estate. With the unreleased songs and concert footage, is it okay to listen and download in case it never gets officially released? Can we assume everyone is in agreement that officially released songs shouldn't be posted on the web for free listening and downloading? Your thoughts are welcomed...

I see no reason for his work to be witheld anymore, released unreleased, whatever... let it all out there..
His performance is astounding and needs to be seen.. It wont hurt his legacy..
You could say he almost sabbotaged his career by wiping himself off youtube
.
Although I respect him for the reasons why..
admire him even more, shows that he was not into the fame and adulation . It was all about Principles and making the world a better place...
People NEED to SEE and HEAR him
His Estate wont suffer from this..They will be making zillions for years to come

How he, or the estate, makes money outside of concerts, record sales, and merchandise is not my business. I've bought every album more than once. I've supported him 100x over, as best I could. If I watch a video of a concert on YouTube, so what. He was remiss in not releasing more videos and putting things out in an official manner. In a way, he created the bootleg market that exists around him by some of his actions over the years (handing out tapes to friends or employees with unreleased songs on it). Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Exactly!
Since the only things I ever hear are Purple Rain era stuff on the stupid radio, no new folks are likely to explore his incredible back catalogue on their own unless they know someone who introduces them to P's various works. Being on the Internet will spur sales because folks who like what they hear will want more and better quality.
Yup. I've been a fan since the beginning and what's left of my collection (after my ex deliberately ruined it to be mean) is packed away. I've bought everything for years and if the estate offers everything that's on bootlegs as official releases I'll happily buy a deluxe legacy commemorative collection from them...until then...

If the Estate wants future generations to buy the product, it should allow at a minimum concert videos to remain on YouTube. Kids need to see and hear him - I agree with that comment completely!

This is slightly off topic, but the Estate HAS to allow his music to be used in movies, on TV and in commercials. How many times have you heard a song in a commercial, and wondered who it was, then sought out that music? I have. The future is here - the Estate needs to license the product while it can. Corvette doesn't advertise (I don't think it does, really) but LRC ... come on, what better tune? And "Kiss" for a cosmetics commercial? Have to move on this.

Don't forget the Coke commercial he already wrote....Allegedly...Um. Yeah. Just sayin. [Edited 9/28/16 10:59am]

I plead the Purple 5th ammendment to the Constitution...or is it the 7th?...or the 3:19? I sucked in government in high school.

My policy on the official discog site (https://sites.google.com/site/princediscog/home/discography/2016) is to add anything that's being posted by someone who was involved in the creation of the music and/or film: even though it's unauthorized by the estate, I consider that if the artist was involved and the estate turns a blind eye to it, it's semi-legitimate. I had the same policy when P was alive, for example when Jesse would post the Bird outtake, St. Paul posted the original cut of NC2U or Robin Power her Number 1 video: not Pince approved but it was also their music, wasn't it? I may have missed such semi-official posthumous streams BTW, so if anyone found out any other, please let me know A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

PHEW! That will keep you busy for AWHILE. Be sure to eat, drink, exercize and moisturize at regular intervals or they'll find you starved, dehydrated and shrivelled at your keyboard trying to tame the unweildy beast that is P's collective definitive catalogue.
I wish The Prince Vault would update fully to 2016 but guess they're taking a break.
It's daunting. Good luck. [Edited 9/28/16 23:49pm]

Princevault's policy seems to have always been to ignore those semi-official releases. It's a policy I respect but I thought I'd be better off adding them, as long as I indicate their specific status. I am really naive as to how this all works. Just heard this wonderful song on Uncle P's Videos facebook page called "I Wonder", and I really don't understand how people have access to these unreleased songs. I can't believe that P gave away THAT money tapes/cds to people. I mean, I'm not complaining because I am really enjoying some of the music, but I saw the interview he did I think it was on Larry King and he didn't seem really happy with the bootlegs because he said "so called fans" when addressing the topic of bootlegs. Jump down my throat if you wish; I just don't know anything about bootlegs and how the unreleased stuff gets out because I am not that hardcore fan.
