You're right... why the hell are all these people using cameras? Don't they realize they just need to remember? You should tell Nikon and canon to just stop selling cameras
My thought toward the purpose of the photo-ban is (1) to keep the guest parties moving at a reasonable rate of time, and (2) to raise value of the site and ecourage return visits--when your memory fades, re-live the essence of the physical site by making a return visit. I don't feel those motivations are in any way wrong. People are not being deprived of anything about the experience in enforcing such a rule. Plus coffe table books of Paisley Park may be sold in the future if tour demand is good--but people always want something extra for free, don't they?

Take your Nikon photo of the building exterior if you need to snap your own custom pic. |

what i also do not want to happen is for some asshole to break away from the tour and take pics of the elevator or stuff like that.
people took their phones and recordingdevices into paisley park when prince threw a party or performed and recorded stuff (which we all enjoyed, i know). eventhough it was made explicitly clear it was a big no-no.
but that should tell you something about how much further people will go now that prince is gone and they feel that they deserve access or pictures of anything and everything.
i'm curious to see how the first month or two of tours will turn out.
Agreed. I'll be there for a normal and a VIP tour in early November. Figured if we are making the trip all the way there we might as well enjoy both experiences. I never expected to be able to take my phone or a camera into the building.
i'm so jealous right now hope you'll have a wonderful experience

This isn't just a Prince idiosyncracy thing. There are plenty of buildings, museums, and exhibits which prohibit taking photos. The Sistine Chapel doesn't allow photos. The guards will eject you for taking a photo of Michaelangelo's painting on the ceiling. Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul prohibits photos - the guards will take your phone and force you to delete your pics. The Bowie IS exhibit in Chicago didn't allow photos. Plenty of other examples, really. I'm sure it's disappointing but really, I don't want to be competing with somebody's full size iPad for a view. I'm sure the tour operators appreciate keeping things running on time by not stopping at every random point for 30 people to take turns shooting photos. . [Edited 10/1/16 13:43pm]
There are a couple of other reasons for this - paint and textiles are damaged by flashes. One camera or cell phone flash might not seem like a lot, but how many people are taking multiple pictures in a short amount of time? And frankly, even places that restrict flashes end up with people who can't figure out their devices, or who think they are above the regulations. So it does make sense to me.
Also, there are IP issues! I have been shocked lately to see people taking photos in museums and galleries for this reason. There could be IP issues with the murals inside, now that it is a museum and not a private space. I'm not as up with the laws on visual art as I am with recordings and live performances. |

This thread is not about whether people should take photos or not at PP. It is about how Graceland Holdings are selling VIP tickets with a misleading description and only informing the customers about what the deal really entails AFTER the purchase is completed. That's cheeky. A lot of responses to this post seem totally beside the point. Life Matters |

I think this is a little unfair given that the Museum hasn't officially opened yet. You have to give them time to work these things out. If you're a person that wants to book before the place has even opened, you have to have some patience and expect that some details are still being worked out and clarified.
It's like being one of the first people to buy a new type of smartphone or a new piece of technology. There ARE gonna be bugs, but they get worked out in time.
It's potentially very dangerous to be addressing a situation with Graceland Holdings/PP/Bremer/Tyka/etc with an "us VS them" rhetoric. Not accusing you personally of that, but IMO it's something we all need to be aware of.
Ultimately, fans, family, estate executors etc, we're all on the same side.

As someone who purchased a VIP ticket, I fully expected that I would not be able to take photos within PP. I imagined the photo opportunity they described to be somewhat like group photo booths set up at the beginning or end of tours, like when you visit Hancock Tower in Chicago. Not my cup of tea - but I recognized the vague details, recalled Prince's personal feelings about photos and cell phones, then managed my expectations. Still remains to be seen. I hope it's something different, otherwise - oh well. |

Ultimately, fans, family, estate executors etc, 5. we're all on the same side.
1. A lot of the responses in this thread were blunt and very unfair to the poster and did not even take into account his valid point.
2 & 3. Gracelands Holdings are not new in dealing with this type of businesses and as it appears, the information in question was/is already available to them and yet still not provided on the main description page, only sent to the customers after they purchase the ticket. Whether it is Paisley Park or any other project, there are laws and principles that apply to all businesses and if Gracelands Holdings were not aware of this by now, they wouldn't be dealing with such projects in the first place.
4 &5. Responses such as "you must be new" appear to bear as much of the "us vs them" rhetoric (or in this case, "us vs you the poster") as anyone else's responses in this thread.
So please people, be kind to one another and do not throw stones at the first person who recognises a tourist trap when they see one. Making an "Exclusive photo opportunity" sound like something more than what it actually is, is a plain and simple misleading selling technique. If no photos are allowed, then why not just say it clearly from the very start. I rest my case.

Yep. The description clearly stated there would be VIP photo opportunities- plural. That's why I didn't go VIP. I don't need a pic in front of a screen of the glyph and a tour guide who was just hired and probably knows less about Paisley than me. I encourage people to tour in the spirit of Prince-if you're unclear as to what that is, go listen carefully to Art Official Age again. Be in the moment, absorb the significance, aura and history of the space you are in. Fully realize you are in his home and the center of not only his creative universe, but a hub for the creativity of others. It is a truly magical space. Don't ruin your experience behind a camera or cell phone. Just be. There are many great photo ops around Minne-the murals, First Avenue wall-those would be great for photos! I hope you do go and enjoy your visit. I don't like the way Graceland Holdings is handling things thus far, but I won't let them take away what Paisley symbolizes for me. That's something sacred they can't have.

Even after reading (and buying) the VIP description, I knew there was no way pictures would be allowed. I'm assuming this photo opprotunity they're talking about is one where you can purchase a picture of yourself...in some designated part of Paisley Park. If anyone has been to the Titanic exhibit in Las Vegas, you know what I'm talking about. You can get your picture taken by a photographer by the Titanic "stairs"......and at the end of your tour, you view your picture and decide if you want to buy it or not. I've been to Graceland back in 2003....and if I remember right..pictures were allowed...just not flashes. But I fully expected not to be able to take pictures on this tour. Im HOPING to at least be able to snap a picture of the outside just to prove I was really there. Cause half my friends don't even believe I'm going!!! hahaha!! |

What would make you think that you could go in there and take pictures, when he didn't like camera's at his concerts. I have a feeling your in for a rude awakening when you go on this tour, its very limited to the first floor. Your lucky that you have the funds and means to go. |

I went to PP yesterday again just to bask in His holy shrine, but it didn't look like the tours were open yet.
.
I did notice however two Jehovah's Witnesses were on each corner of the block ready to meet up with people who were visiting the fence. I didn't stop to chat although had I not had my GF and kid with me I would have gladly talked with them.
.
I hope they're respectful to any fans that are there who just want to be left alone. It seems a little opportunistic, but honestly, who knows - Prince would probably have been down with it. Granted the only JW I really wanted to talk to was him.
.
Or Larry. I'd totally like to talk to Larry. [Edited 10/3/16 12:44pm] |
