It's weird to have Kim Basinger on it - I keep reminding myself that I'm not listening to audio samples of the film. It's really weird. But her voice work is good actually - better than Prince's spoken word parts imo. I feel like I'm listening to something I probably shouldn't be haha

It's such a strange EP - but it's cool. People just don't put out EPs like they used to anymore - and it's too bad!

Edit: The Passion is so freakin' good - trippy and smooth at the same time. Just incredible work all over this thing. I will defend this EP and the Batman album until the end.

The Scandalous Sex Suite is prime Prince. "The Passion" is one of his best guitar solos, and often overlooked. It's not weird at all to me, but it is Prince taking one song and really expanding on it. He'd not really done that before. The music really became the backdrop to the feeling and the mood of what was going on. It's a bit like Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite, whereas it's a concept, not just a bunch of remixes. There's a story there. It's pretty amazing stuff.

Most of his other stuff is really just maxi singles, not EPs, per se. But, the exceptions are Gett Off, New Power Generation, Cream, and The Beautiful Experience. Cream flows from one song to the other, and it's an interesting take on the main track. New Power Generation has the same synergy in the last 3 tracks alone (I live for "Loveleft, Loveright"). Gett Off has such great takes on the vibe of the main song. I love "Violet The Organ Grinder", "Gangsta Glam" and "Clockin' The Jizz".

Space is just a bunch of remixes, although some of them are primo.

Agree with these. The Space maxi is worth it for the Universal Love Remix alone.

It's certainly something that could be considered. Although Prince was playing with 'sections' in music before with stuff like "Computer Blue", and even the first four tracks on Parade with the way they were recorded and segued. For me, the Parade stuff borrowed heavily from the way Moody Blues sectioned and segued their music. Radio stations hated them because there was no beginning or end to some songs - not enough for radio. Rush had a time of it too.

I don't know how popular the maxi of "I Want Your Sex" was back then, though. It was more about the first section on radio and the controversy around it. I never heard anyone playing the whole thing on radio, and there was certainly no video for it. So I wonder if Prince ever knew about the full 3 sections on the maxi. Perhaps he did.

The lack of a longer video confuses me because GM was such a pioneer in video, and with MJ doing lengthy videos, and even Styx making a long form video, I wonder why GM never took the whole "I Want Your Sex" maxi to a new place on film. God, can you even imagine that in the late 80s???

Yes, The Rapture is my favorite on this EP. But my all-time favorite is the Space Maxi-single.

I've never heard of that and Princevault doesn't mention it either. If confirmed it'd be great if u could find what song it is.

Loooooove that one. In some ways, it sounds like a demo for a pop gospel type song. Prince never had a great upbeat choir song like that. I mean, "Gold" was faster tempo than "Purple Rain", but anytime he used The Steeles or invoked that choir sound, it was never on an uptempo song (unless I'm totally forgetting something). "Loveleft Loveright" could have been embellished and made into something even more grand. But I'll take it the way it stands.

I hadn't listened to Dear Michaelangelo for years. That track got worn out thirty or so years ago as I kept dropping the needle on Prince's guitar and Eddie M.'s sax solos. I can hear some similarities with the style of the guitar on The Rapture, especially when sped up, but they are quite clearly different to my ears.

The Crime, The Passion and The Rapture are simply hypnotic, though I'll admit it took me some time to get into the suite when it came out. It seemed overly long, even tedious, until one day I got lost in its soundscape and woke up to its brilliance. I miss those days of 12" vinyl bliss.
