FUNKNROLL said: I have no doubt that he was shy and vulnerable. He could hide it behind his swagger, transcend it in performance, attack when he felt threatened. I know shy when I see it, and he fits the bill. Thus, I am not at all surprised by what this interviewer said. If he is doing it for attention, he could made something up much more provocative. It's okay if others see it differently.
Funknroll. These two things are in no way inconsistent with each other. Like Gandorb I am pretty damn sure P was shy/socially awkward....it's all over him almost every time you see him have to speak in front of a camera when he was a) not acting or b) talking to people he knew, trusted or liked (and even then you can often see the tension in his hands)...At the same time, I'm also pretty damn sure that he didn't need anything to help him perform...that was his gift, and all he had to do was open himself up and he was right there... And I'm also certain these things can coexist because I have exactly the same thing. I can stand in front of a room full of 200 strangers and lecture for an hour and be completely in my element. But a room full of people I don't know who I have to make small talk with is my idea of hell.

Preach!
As a nurse/supervisor for 34 years I could deal with patients, families, doctors, teach my staff, but try me at the staff XMas party. Not good. I bounced my leg until I had been there long enough to be polite then I'd evaporated into mist to gtf out of there with a quickness.
Remember people saying P would suddenly appear or disappear and nobody actually saw it? Like he had a super power?
Yup. I've done it for years. It's an art, but it's also a coping mechanism. |

This subject kind of makes me wonder what career path he would have taken if he hadn't become a successful musical artist. I could totally see him as a music instructor. Manager. Engineer. Aw, hell, he was doing all of that anyway. [Edited 9/28/16 18:25pm] "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Interesting you say this. I took a nap today and dreamed of Prince. He was very quiet, shy, and he was a farmer! It was interesting to see him riding around in a pickup truck, with the window down, wearing a straw hat. I guess I was incorporating a part of the interview from the neighbor in Canada in which Prince was growing his own herbs/food and they'd share it with the neighbor.

HA! Something like that, but the hat was a little different. Strange the things we dream. And thank you!

Sounds like a lie.
Watch how he nearly cries after singing Little Red Corvette. Looks like a shy guy to me.

And after watching him perform all these years this conversation just made me realize how annoying I found it that his concert lighting would be all dim and back then I thought it was sexy and artistic but now I think it was deliberate to obscure the audience's veiw until he felt at ease.
Also the gum chewing. It looks cute and benign but I think he was calming himself. Sorta soothing himself like a baby sucking his thumb. Hmmm |
