Stunning performance and the rain was perfect.

Hello...Purple Rain...It's like P arranged it for dramatic effect just for this performance.

The poor guy being worried about all the rain, electric this & that, the safety worries...and P wanted more rain. aweome performance. and he brought his A game. the world got to see what we fans already knew.

He was incredible and arrogant and humble and so wonderful. He'll never be forgotten nor his Super bowl performance topped.

The best performances ever at 2 legendary venues: The Rock and Roll HOF and the Super Bowl.

The greatest of all time got even better at the greatest moments.

I never get tired of watching this amazing performance. Imo the best super bowl performance of all time. I also love the press conference performance. He never answered any questions just let his music speak for him and it spoke volumes.

The part that always makes me super emotional, apart from when the sheet goes up and that amazing silhouette is 30 ft tall, is when just after he strikes that last chord on the guitar, he lifts his hand up and shouts "YES!" in such a heavy exhale, you just KNEW he was so relieved and proud that everything had gone off perfectly. The "can you make it rain harder" line was a typical confident Prince line, but I read an article from the manager/promoters he was working with at the time who said that deep down he was actually quite nervous leading up to the broadcast, and was extra hard on everyone in full-scale rehearsals in Miami in order to make everything be perfect for what he knew was possibly his biggest live performance moment ever.

Plus he looked hella fine that night. Damn.

Definitely the best Superbowl performance ever... And I try to say that in the least biased tone ever lol

Seriously, a good friend of mine who does not like Prince AT ALL (he's more of a rap-rock guy) told me that he thought it was amazing, and the next day he downloaded guitar tabs for Purple Rain and was trying to learn how to play it.

If you will, so will I

That's a very astute observation about his outfit colors. I never thought of that. It makes perfect sense because turquoise and orange is not a common color combination.

His entire set was amazing. I've revisited a lot of Super Bowl performances and most of them were dreadful. Too many artists on stage lip syncing songs that don't translate well to a big stadium; too many older acts that really showed their age (looking at you Rolling Stones and The Who); too many productions full of random artists that don't really belong together (like Aerosmith, Britney Spears and N'Sync). Prince was just Prince on stage with his guitar and the best marching band in the country. A marching band that wasn't just a prop; one that was brilliantly used throughout the performance. Looking back at other half time shows very few from 1991 onwards utilized a marching band. I think it was brilliant that Prince did. One thing associated with football (high school and college) is marching bands. And I think his song choices were brilliant. He wasn't there because he was promoting a new album and playing a bunch of songs nobody knew. He's Prince yet he throws in three covers all of which flowed and fit the set perfectly. His Purple Rain solo when the white sheet comes up and all you see is his silhouette is iconic and will forever be remembered. And of course playing in the rain....it was the first and only (so far) Super Bowl where it rained. I know U2 usually top people's list of the best Super Bowl half time show but I think that's more to do with them performing right after 9/11 than anything else. For me no performance before or afte tops Prince. Sorry Michael, Bruce, Madonna, Beyoncรฉ. Prince has you beat. Anyone else agree?

I watched it live and just remember how great it was. I was in college. After he died, I watched it again because I really didn't remember any specifics about the performance, just that it was fantastic. I am a special education teacher and I showed the SB performance to my students (who were in grades 1-3) right after he died and they loved it!

What else can I say but that Prince was amazing. The best Super Bowl performance I've ever seen. Loved the marching band's involvement, loved when everyone was running up to the front of the stage in the rain to get closer to him. The younger folks singing along to Purple Rain, raising their hands in the air. It was just so real, emotional. Prince the icon... He was so humble and calm and beautiful...

Thanks for the article. So happy that they were smart enough to ask him to perform even without a song to promote. They knew he was a legend... Loved that the writer respectfully used the word petite to describe him. Sometimes they try to be funny and it's a big eye roll.

I recently read Bruce Springsteen's description of his appearance as the half-time entertainment at a Super Bowl. He said it was like no other experience in his lifetime - the intensity of the preparation and the actual show itself was overwhelming. And he didn't have to work in the rain!

It was amazing, i saw it last thursday, til now i thought this performance was overrated but now i see it's not. Beautiful performance, he looked beautiful, so handsome. This is the best half time, second is Paul and third Madonna then Michael's perfornmance.

Loving how Bruce Springsteen seems like a fan just like the rest of us. He always has such great things to say about Peince. Prince was a musician's musician.

Reading the comments makes me teary eyed.

I was so proud of P that night.

I remember screaming at the TV "YOU FREAKING NAILED IT!"

P's Super Bowl performance is forever in my heart.

This photo is of P reminding us he is Number Uno.

Yes his RRHOF performance was amazing (even though I hate LGC with horns lol ). I remember Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top saying Prince set the bar so high that night with his performance everyone else was worried they wouldn't be able to match it.

Another great thing about both performances is they show off how great P was at the segue, seamlessly going from one song to the next blending them together beautifully. Nobody did it better, period.

I love this photo because it really shows how wet everything was. First and only performance (so far) in the rain. The 2017 Super Bowl is Lady Gaga. She may have an elsborate performance/stage but it won't match the raw intensity and emotion of P's performance. He didn't need all that fancy stuff, he just needed a guitar and a microphone.
