The Complete Prince And The Revolution Sessions

Imagine a box-set designed like the Columbia/Legacy Miles Davis studio sets. The Complete Prince And The Revolution Sessions - everything released and unreleased together, including everything from the period of the Revolution (even if, like When Doves Cry, it was recorded solo).

What would be on it? How many discs would it need to be? What would you like in the packaging? Who would contribute to liner notes? For the tracks that were released in edited form (eg. Computer Blue) would you want those original edits as well as the full versions?

Chronological order, or original album followed by outtakes?

Who could come up with a chronological tracklist, based on information in DMSR?

Per Nilsen, at a guess ... but he'd probably use his research notes, Days of Wild and Turn It Up 2.0 too.

I think I'll bring my copy of DMSR into work tomorrow - I'll start to come up with some kind of chronological set.

I have DOW, but that only shows the circulating tracks. I'm not thinking of a CDR set - I'm thinking of what it would be possible for Prince to release. A fantasy world, I know.

I only have TIU 1.0, not 2.0 - does it also list uncirculating (but known) tracks - and does it list them in date order like DMSR, or in large time periods, like TIU 1.0?

IT lists them in large time periods but it provides more accuracy under some of the song descriptions.

Hmmm, well, I've been looking at DMSR this morning and this is a little trickier than I would have thought. Would you want the songs he worked on for others (ie. they provided lead vocals, even in demo form), or just his lead vox and instrumentals?

I'm thinking the Revolution set would go from August 1983-early-Sept. 1986 sessions - would anyone disagree? This timeline would then include many SOTT tracks, but since they were included on Dream Factory (a P & The Revolution album), they can be considered Revolution songs for this purpose. Those songs later re-worked to have no Revolution input (eg. Strange Relationship) would have the later version on the next set, covering late 1986 - 19??

Maybe tonight I'll create a rough tracklist - in the meantime, any thoughts?

Sounds right to me.
Perhaps I'll post a rough tracklist in a bit.
It'll be impossible to put the tracks in strict
chronological order though, as the exact date of
initial recording isn't known for a lot of them.

That was great, Boris - thanks. It misses out the Flesh sessions, though - would you put them on a separate set?
