According to a local Twin Cities news report, the fashion designers involved included some that collaborated with Prince in the past and others who wanted to participate as a tribute to him.

A local Minneapolis museum will have an exhibit related to this displayed for several weeks including during the week of the official Prince tribute and the special dance parties being organized by Prince's family.
