What do you think Prince was ACTUALLY like?

If you act like the image doesn't exist and you take in all the accounts of people who knew him and string them together, does he appear drastically different from the Prince persona we know?

It's such a puzzle.

I really have no idea. One would have to know someone on a personal level to really know what they are actually like. I'm gonna say whatever he was like we only saw a small portion of that. That's why I am not hard on those who are writing or who will write books in the future because the inner circle are the only ones who really knew him. I am not looking for tell alls. Just those who KNEW him personally and can share insight into the person he was off the stage and behind closed doors. Just the man, not the image.

I think he;

had social phobia,

had intimacy issues

had trust issues

was a perfectionist

was narcissistic

It think that all of these characteristics are a reaction to emotional injuries that he sustained as a child from his family of origin and his peers.

I think he had something to prove to himself and to the world.

I think he proved it.

I think that his hyper-sexual nature was a combination of having very high testosterone and being very shy.

I think he was more comfortable having sex with someone than he was with talking to that person.

Given this, he could only be truly close with women, because he was heterosexual.

I think that he was about as high functioning as anyone ever gets.

I think his belief in God made him a stronger person and helped him surmount his obstacles in life.

I think that was probably great company for the people he could be himself around, i.e. smart, interesting, funny, energetic, upbeat, knowledgeable.

I think he was cool.

I agree.

I also think he's shown over the years that he could be very old-fashioned in ways that some might feel contradict his provocative lyrics/performances.

I've also felt he could be a collossal PITA when he wanted to be. Lol

Some people are so socially phobic that they find superficial conversation far more difficult and scary than intimate conversations and sex.

They skip the superficial conversation part, go straight to the intimate conversation, then to the sex, if the sex is good and orgasm is reached oxytocin is released in ones body.

Oxytocin is one of the hormone that causes pair bonding.

This breaks the ice and establishes enough trust to then have more relaxed interaction on a superficial level.

It is the opposite of things getting weird after sex.

Thing start out weird before sex and become normal and comfortable after sex.

Such a pattern requires that the person be very sensitive to the chemistry of others.

.

Also the more sex one has, the more sex one wants because the oxytocin released when one has an orgasm, stimulates the production of testosterone, which in tern lead to more sexual activity, hence more oxytocin, hence more testosterone and so on in a self perpetuating cycle resulting in an increasingly strong sex drive.

.

And studies have shown that performers such as actors, dancers, musicians and athletes have much much higher level of testosterone than average people with average jobs. (sometimes twice as high or even higher)

.

[Edited 9/24/16 20:42pm]

I think this is a decent analysis. His sex drive always bothered(s) me; he was just so unfaithful and hypocritical in his dealings with women, that it's becoming increasingly difficult to see him as a good guy.

Either Lisa or Wendy said, after the First Avenue shows, that the band was a bit adrift because they had been "trained" by Prince how to be his band. They were taught to perform to his cues. We all know about the rehearsals - seemingly endless so that the show would be perfect. But since Prince was a teenager, he was the front man, the leader, he had the only say in his career. That type of personality doesn't end at work; we saw it permeate his interaction with the public, the media, social events, etc. It surely affected his personal life and from certain reports was not pleasant. People who have risen to his level are often not the most agreeable with others.

I feel as if I should preface this by qualifying my fandom. I am an old school fan who didn't take 30 years off in between. Been an active P fan since being exposed to him as a kid. And I know this is a delicate assumption to throw out there, but it's really more of a curiosity. I've always wondered if he had a mental illness, maybe schizophrenia or something similar. His talk of other identities, his beliefs in conspiracy theories, his thinking that food and water were not always necessary, beliefs in otherworldly entities...are all found in schizophrenic patients (but not limited to). I thought he was always forming a persona and some of the things he said were an attempt to cultivate that persona, but I'm not sure it's always about P trying to be mysterious. I dunno, like I said - a curiosity. Nothing more. And certainly not something that would change my perception of P if it were true.

I don't think he had schizophrenia. He was far too together to have had that and still far too sane. If he had schizophrenia it wouldn't have gone unnoticed and he wouldn't have been able to live the life he did. If he had anything, I would guess Asperger's or Schizotypal personality disorder.
