As much as I love the visuals I prefer the album to the movie. And I love the 12" of IIWYG the best of all
But the 12" version is the same as the album version, isn´t it?
Yes, the complete version. |

No because the 12" is backed with the extended Shockadelica |

Yes it is, give or take a couple of seconds. I think the 12" take clocks about 6 seconds shorter than the actual album version. But in general, there is no extended version or remix of it. Of course the gem is the extended "Shockadelica" on the b-side.
I sorta wish he'd approached the 12" of IIWYG the say he did "I Would Die 4 U", where a rehearsal or "live" band version was released. They could have recorded a great version, solely for the 12", during the SOTT rehearsals or sound checks and made that the 12" release.

I almost wish they did a new version of the film with the most obvious sync problems being edited out. There are maybe 20-30 awkward-looking moments that could be easily replaced with something else, even footage of the audience. When he, say, does an impressive-looking spin, they could just zoom to his hips and legs, so that the head would be missing.
I love the album and the film equally. There's something that I really appreciate about the way the music sounds on the film, even if it's clearly overdubbed. Something about way the drums and the vocals sounding like they belong in a different space than the rest of the music isappealing to me. It probably shouldn't sound so good to my ears, but it does.
The 16:9 release has some of those sync problems corrected (like Miko's clapping in the intro of "ICNTTPOYM"). 20-30 seems a bit much, but perhaps. It might be the Canadian or Brazilian release of the film (i always forget which is which and which is better, because one of them sucks). PalladiaTV aired the widescreen versions of PR, UTCM, GB, and SOTT when they came out in a better format. I put the SOTT airing on a DVD. It's around here somewhere. But no one is going to recut the entire film. Magoli directed it well, but the editing did need some re-checks before it was released.
Technically, it's not overdubbed. They were lip-syncing to a live show they already did on tour. But - six of one.
As a sidenote: I don't know if you know this, but there is a lot of video that leaked out years ago from the filming of SOTT. It shows take after take of things like "Housequake" or "Hot Thing", and shows where Prince is messing up (missing a dance step, etc), and stopping and starting over. Much like the interesting yet mundane nature of the "Mountains" shoot. It's still rather fascinating to see Prince's need for perfection, and his energy and zeal in his work ethic. The guy was 29 and on a mission.

I'm not sure what would be the correct term instead of "overdubbing", but according to the books I've read they redid most of Prince's vocals and Sheila's drums in the studio. I think the term "overdub" applies in the sense that there must have been certain quite a lot of the leakage, especially from the drums, to the other microphones on the stage. I can't tell for sure, but I think that's the reason why the drums are so unusually loud in the final mix of the product. That way they'll cover the original drums, in case they weren't able to fully get rid of them simply by muting the tracks they were originally recorded to. It result in an interesting sound, in any case.
I did not intend to use the term "overdub" in the same sense as "lipsync" though. Although you could probably say that in the final product Prince is mostly lipsyncing to vocals that were studio overdubs. How's that for "live"?

I love everything SOTT era...especially the Valium concert bootleg video.
It's crazy that the movie is missing the album's BEST future live songs in Strange Relationship and Dorothy. |

Oh man, a tough question. The SOTT album is everything to me, it solidified my bond to Prince forever. I played this album out - went to sleep listening to all the songs. Then, when the SOTT film came out I was blown away. It brought to life all the songs I loved so much. It was electrifying to watch and still is to this day. Such soulful, powerful and inspiring work on both pieces - I love them equally.

I think we're both right. I do remember reading the thing about his vocals and the drums, I think.
It's sorta funny that Prince wiped his hands of SOTT in some ways because there was so much to do with the movie. Film it, didn't work. Record it at Paisley Park, cool. Overdub huge sections again. The stress of all that showed in the choppy editing sometimes. Why not just film the whole concert at Paisley Park, do the whole album front to back, record sound and all, and let it be?
Hell, I'd be doing X, too, after all that!

I have the album and the 12" , both vinyl, and have never noticed any differences. Will take a closer listen now. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?" |

We're talking about the movie though, you realize? At least I was.
