Embarrassed to say, but for waaayyy too long after first hearing "1999", my mom and I agreed that Prince was saying, "Two thousand zero zero/ my deodorant's outta time!"

We rationalized that by thinking of when we'd sweat in the heat of a party ("like it's 1999..."), or maybe outdoors in summer heat and had the feeling that deodorant wasn't going to do the work...it would be "outta time". That became a running joke in our family biggrin

In Kiss, I'm still convinced he's saying "my love, will be your FOOL", though some lyric sites say "Food".

.

I realize "food" is a better rhyme with "atittude" but "Fool" makes more sense. It's an expression.

It is "fool". He's reversing the phrase "I'm a fool for love" and saying she will be a fool for his love.

That's what I always thought. Lyrics sites say "food" SMH

My first Prince record purchased was 1999. On "Let's Pretend We're Married", he says--

"I'm in love with God, he's the only way..."

.

Now, what I thought he was saying was--

"I'm in love with guys, it's the only way..."

.

LMAO.

I was 12 years old--don't hate! cool

When I was 12, I was definitely singing that - Prince song or not. lol

Don't get me wrong. I admired that he was so open about sexuality in his music, and what I initially thought was an ode to homosexualty here. I've always thought a person is entitled to their own happiness. My comment about the hate was mostly that I misheard such an easy line of lyrics and certain fans around these parts get persnickety over the littlest damn thing. Not to mention the possibility of a staunchly religious Prince fan here feeling outraged that I ironically mistook Prince's shout-out to almighty God as an ode to same-sex love. Kinda funny when I think about it now. cool

Pretty sure I read an amusing thread once about Bob Mix in Gett Off, I guess it was you who started it! Has to be one of my favorite misheard lyrics, that is too funny

So, I swear I read someone on here that thought "Controversy" was "Country Pussy"? Did I read that other post wrong that said "Count your Pussy?" and make up my own version? If so, it's stuck. I have been singing "Country Pussy" for 2 weeks now...haha And my husband has been too since I told him. It's one of those things that you can't unheard. LOL And, well he lived in Minneapolis, MN and there are a lot of farms and fields...so I'm sure he had many chances to get some "country pussy"....right? giggle

Yes, really. I was about 14 and I'm not a native speaker of English. I thought it sounded very artsy and imaginative.

"Punch a higher floor", as a kid I always sang, "Honey child, go...". I was six, seemed to make sense, and even now, knowing what he is saying, it takes a conscious effort to not sing it that way.

I've wondered for a long time if the last line of "Sometimes it Snows in April" says/means "passed" rather than "past" -- it makes more sense to me: "Love it isn't love until it's passed".." Anyone have an ultra official lyric sheet?

The official songbook for Parade says "past".

I hear an "h" in the girls background vocals.
Do they sing "until it's had", while Prince sings "past"?

I thought it was "Whatcha waitin' for?" -- this is what you get in a land before internet lyrics sites! I've been singing it for so long that I have a hard time changing it.

When I first heard Race, I thought he said "in space, I'm a human". (The true lyrics are "in the space, I mark human".) It was weird, but considering that there's a song called Space on the album and all...

I justified it by thinking that, it we were dealing with aliens, what made us the same (the human race) would suddenly be more important than what made us different (different races). I still can't decide if I'm relieved or disappointed by the real lyrics!
