You know what ... I've learned not to talk to non-Prince-lovers about Prince. They just don't get it. There are people in my office who have repeatedly told me that THEY ARE SURE that he is gay and that he had HIV/AIDS.

Don't bother talking to them. That why I love this site (even with some of the negativity, even in this thread). I don't have to explain to anyone why he is so great. The ones who come to this website KNOW, they understand what it means to feel his music touch your soul.

so now i just go with generic answers to these generic questions and those never
incite a stupid response. when you appear to like 'a bit of everything' people are
satisfied and move on to the next topic.

sure, it's boring to talk to people like that and you hardly ever discover any new
writers, films or albums from those type of conversations, but it also leaves you

with a more zen feeling and way less social anxiety

and then you just come here or other places where you know there are people
hanging out who either appreciate learning about something new, or talking with
you about things you both love.

and fcuz, your very good friends in real life, who you know actually listen for the
2 or 3 minutes you talk about a topic you're passionate about, without quipping
that someone is shit or boring or gay or whatever.

very last time i tried to talk someone into prince was waaaaay back in 1997. we
went to school together and always walked from the station to the school and
just talk about whatever. i always thought he was kind of a nice guy. then one
day *he* asks about prince, since i've always got his music on my headphones.

then come, par the course, the comments of 'he's such a stupid fag'. i'm like "eh?
why would you say that? you know i like his music a lot. you and i are friendly, so
there's no need to try to rile me up, besides i won't bite. plus YOU ask me what it
is about his music that i like'.

so then i make the mistake of saying 'he's not gay, he's even married'. to which

You could never get Prince played in the main UK clubs in the 80's because his BMP was too slow. Occassionally you'd get one DJ who would agree to spin Kiss, and it either cleared the dance floor or left the ones doing a 'dad dance' from side to side.

BMP, I assume means songs that are fairly slow? Well in the 80's he had fast songs also, so what was the deal?

you know its strange, I know more about Prince now after he died than I did before. I had no idea he played 27 instruments, wrote every single song; including songs for other performers, choregraphed his shows, etc. And his stage presence, unbelievable. Thank god for Youtube. I loved the Musicology Tour, I remember people talking about this tour saying, OMG, Prince is unbelievalbe in concert.

This man was truly incredible. A workaholic and someone who could not leave the studio to stop creating and performing. That was his life.

I sadly believe, his pain took him out, not so much the drugs. Grant it, he became addicted to pain medicine, but he probably felt he needed it to perform.

I really miss Prince. There is not an artist out there today that can do everything he did. He was a true musician.

Very interesting because in the states, Prince topped the dance club play charts many times in the 80s. 15 top ten dance hits overall in his career so DJs were definitely playing his songs there.

You would get those in indie clubs here, but not the main dance clubs. I actually preferred that type of place (London Clubs like The Garage, The Dome, Underworld). They took off from about 88 and through the grunge era particularly. The Farm, Inspiral Carpets, through to the likes of EMF.

I thnk Prince's problem was his BPM never suited the dance clubs, and his image never suited the indie clubs, so he was often left out of both.
