Is it weird to name your kids after Prince?

So...im pregnant again! I shared with you guys already that I lost a pregnancy literally 3 weeks before Prince passed and so losing him really compounded my grief.

Im hoping and praying this pregnancy goes well and I was thinking if its a boy, ill either give him Prince as a middle name or Ahmir as a first name (female variant if it's a girl) is this weird to you guys? Just another antidote my partner's name means King so...yea.

I have a four year old son named Prince, named after the artist. My wife and I fought hard over the name....She did not like it, I knew his name would be Prince once he entered our life even after our two daughters born before him.....

Name your son Prince, Go For It. I did, although it was while he was alive.

I mean, name your kid whatever you wish, but remember despite your love of Prince, they have to endure that name in school & otherwise for a lifetime. My cousin went this route, but played it low key. Her first born, a boy, was named Jordan Christopher, after Michael Jordan (she's a bulls fan), and Prince's character in UTCM.

There is a thread about Prince baby names still active. You might get some ideas from there, too: http://prince.org/msg/7/432370

I do think you're wise to keep Prince or Ahmir (which seems more obscure actually) to a middle name. But there were names you could go with for a first name. Christopher. Joey. Gregory (not the baby, but the character in Lovesexy). Alexander. Jamie (male or female). I do think Camille is a pretty girl's name.

Best of luck on your new carrying efforts. I know mom's grieve greatly over miscarriages. But I remember a line in Private Parts, the Howard Stern movie. It seems silly to think of this, but he made a good point when his wife miscarried their child. It was noted that it was a healthy thing, that the body rejected the pregnancy. It wasn't ready to carry it because of whatever reason or variable. It's time to recoup, re-evaluate, and move forward. And we're anxious to hear what you're going to name the new baby!

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Congrats! I agree that making it a middle name is a good idea. Remember that Prince was teased about his name among other things. How about Paisley if it's a girl? Or Nate if it's a boy? lol

Thank you for your congrats and suggestions

Dad would NEVER outright let me name him Prince which is why if I did it, it would be a middle name.

With his name meaning King i think it gives the Prince or name meaning Prince a double meaning, making it less weird (i think) lol

Sorry, but Paisley sounds like a dog's name. And Nate is short for Nathan. That's a beautiful name! Just like Christopher or Cynthia. So if you want to remember Prince, choose something where the Prince connection isn't too obvious. And forget about Ahmir. Sorry if I'm being a bit harsh, but who wants to be named after the deceased son of a deceased superstar?

MJ didn't name his kid after Prince. The name "Prince" was a family name passed down on his mother's side from her great grandfather and grandfather.

First or middle....whichever you and your spouse decide upon. I don't think it's weird at all. Prince MEANS something to you, what better way to honor that if that's what you'd like to do?

As an aside, I will not be having any more children lol However, we absolutely adore our Morkies and at some point, there will be another that we'll want. It's already planned to name him Prince lol

Welcome to "the org", Mumio…they can have you, but I'll have your love in the end nod

definitely. It just depends on the person what they think of their name. My grandma's first name was Queen and she was really embarrassed about it. But theres lots of names that have royal meanings, just less obvious if in other languages. smile I like the idea that God or the incoming child tells the parents what name they should have.

Congratulations! biggrin

The crazy months prior to the crazier months of early parenthood can lead a few overzealous parents to choose certain names that may not be the best ones for their child. You know you have made the right choice if you can easily visualise yourself(ves) calling out your 3 year old running away in the middle of a busy supermaket, without foreseeing a certain sense of embarrassment. If this test works, go for it!

I did this myself and suddenly started crossing out a few. lol

Wishing you the best for rest of the pregnancy.

My oldests name was Ahmira literally until 5 mins before i signed the birth certificate but i changed it due to me wanting my daughter to have the same initials as my mom.

Both of my daughter's have unique but sensible names that fit them.

This will likely be my last kid (3 is my limit) and since things are going well I'm comfortable enough to start getting excited.

TMBGITW is the song i used to sing to my oldest when she was a baby so that's definitely on the setlist lol

I dont have a problem what others want to do, but I personally would never name a child after a celebrity - and especially one with the name Prince - because they are stuck with this the rest of their lives and what if they dont like the person they are named after? It is different if you name after a family member as there is a blood tie there........but that is just how I feel about it. Naming a baby is such a personal thing and one both parents must love and agree on that name.

I love Prince's name and is sure fit him perfectly, but I would hate to see it become a common name. Imagine some fat red headed freckly horrible kid who liked to rip the wings of flies named Prince !!! (cringe). I guess it is like how many have named their kids Madonna - instantly you think "oh the parents must be Madonna fans" so it is kind of lost there.......

Not really explaining this well, but I hope you get what I mean.

PS and I kind of think the fact you have asked the question to start with you are not really confident in the choice? I do like the list of alternative names for Prince though - they are great.

Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

On a side note, that reminds me that another macho movie star Cary Grant's real name was Archibald Alexander Leach. lol
