That's a grandiose statement. It'll get a few opinions that's for sure.

For me, he made my sunshine, so I have a grandiose opinion. But I'm not completely delusional that I'd say "ever" is a fact.

it's safe to say it for some of us now, he was the greatest, as Jon Bream said, all around the best. No one like him. There are guys who can best him in one or two departments but you throw it all together and add it up, he was the greatest. And i know you guys want to stir it up but forget it, no one will ever make me change my mind. All due respect to all the brilliant artists who were great in their rights.

For me, it would be "one of the greatest artist ever lived". There is something to be said about a few others. James Brown among others biggrin

Prince was the greatest ever was and will be. Black? He was a rainbow child. He claimed it so why argue?
I asked Prince what he was planning to do. He told me , I'm going to look for the ladder. I asked him what that meant. All he said was, sometimes it snows in April. - book D.M.S.R.

I'd have to say Prince was most definitely the most talented, most productive ,most versatile of artist I've heard. Greatest black artist ever? I guess it depends on your taste. I still find it fascinating how one artist can jump from so many genres of music vocally so well. From Soft & Wet, Purple Rain, 1999,Insatiable, I can't think of any black artist dead or alive who was or are just as talented ,musically inclined ,versatile or productive as Prince. Some artist who have been on the scene long before Prince haven't release 25 albums yet.

Eh, idk I guess this answer just depends on what you like and what you mean by "artist." For me, I believe that Prince was the greatest musician, and Michael Jackson was the greatest entertainer. I can't rank one higher than the other since they are just too different. "The greatest black artist" is such a complicated debate; I would start with the originators, people who literally started from scratch and were their own influence. Great question, but don't hate me, I think he deserves a better title than that.
