Pictured: André Cymone on Bass, Prince's cousin Charles Smith on drums, and Prince on guitar - shown here in their early incarnation as Grand Central, March 1975.

In the early 1970s, the Way Community Center, a local recreation center in the heart of Black Minneapolis, hosted battles of the bands as competitive as New York’s 1980s rap battles. Flyte Tyme (whose name was inspired by the Charlie Parker recording "Bird in Flight") and Grand Central (inspired by Prince’s fascination with Grand Funk Railroad) were two of the most electrifying rival bands.

Considered to be the creation of bassist André Cymone (originally Anderson), Grand Central included André’s younger sister Linda on keyboards, Terry Jackson and William Doughty on percussion, and drummer Charles "Chazz" Smith (who played football with Terry Lewis in high school and was Prince’s cousin), later replaced by a left-handed drummer named Morris Day. The final and most notable member was Prince, plucking the guitar - along with any other instrument he could lay his hands on - with abandon. All of the members ranged in age from thirteen to sixteen and were self-taught musicians.

A little gem on eBay back in the mid-00's: Prince's first business card and a copy of the 1978 local phone directory! Was informed (by my friend that purchased it) the card actually belonged to his Father, John L., and was for HIS jazz trio

i 2 listened 2 this song blasted (headphones of coarse) when he passed and cried so hard, i got so lost in the lyrics and put it on repeat until i couldn't take anymore (eyes swollen) i had 2 get it out

So many amazing photos! I can't even catch up. Monkey you got some gems I haven't seen!

I just got back from Minneapolis today. I can't even begin to describe the emotional roller coaster that I went on. The girls and I had a blast. I'm still trying to process everything that happened. I will post some pics when I can, but I wanted to pop in and say Hi. Hope everyone's doing well! grouphug heart

The lyrics to this song are poetry. I don't completely understand the lyrics, but they are still incredibly beautiful.
