Does your significant other enjoy Prince's music?

While my partner of almost 16 years both enjoy music and share mutual love for certain artists and go to concerts regularly, he's not really a fan of Prince's music. I've dragged him to a couple of Prince concerts before but he doesn't really enjoy his music apart from a couple of songs he barely knows so I've gone to many other Prince concerts over the years without him. He "tolerates" my love for Prince's music but prefers listening to other artists we both enjoy when playing CDs in the car. Even with Prince's recent death, he doesn't really understand the impact of losing Prince in my life.

I don't have a S.O., but my roommate is my ex boyfriend. (We broke up, ironically, on November 4, about 15 years ago.) When we met, he had ATWIAD, and I'm not sure anything else in his big record collection. He had Purple Rain on BETA and VHS. He said it was the first BETA he ever bought.

Over the years, he's certainly learned Prince songs from me playing them. He was singing along to stuff on The Gold Experience a few years ago, in the car. I said, "How do you know this????" He said, "You play it all the damn time!"

Busted.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Thanks for sharing! Interestingly, the couple of Prince songs my partner loves are from Purple Rain-- The Beautiful Ones and Darling Nikki. That's great you guys remained friends/roommate after you broke up.

We always said we'd stay friends, but it was a struggle. I was very resentful for a few years. But, we have our own lives, and we still share times together (not those times - not ever anymore, thank God). He even quotes Purple Rain lines now - or tries to. But he knows immediately when I do if we're play fighting or something. "Doesn't that mean anything to you? I mean doesn't that make you feel like shit?" or "I'm going to be totally honest with you, I think you're being full of shit." hahaha

But even history doesn't make him sit & watch Graffiti Bridge with me. Not that I'm queuing it up very often.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Yes, but not as much as I do. She appreciates him as an artist. Prince's music is rarely played in the house though, only when a new bootleg or something comes out.

There is so much other music that we both enjoy and would rather listen to.

My ex and I got together right as P's music career was starting. By the time we got married and I became a fan, my ex did too.

By the time of the 1999 concerts, my ex had started to resent my being a P fan although he still went to concerts with me. B

By Purple Rain, any mention of P pissed him off and he'd ridicule any memorabilia I got, often damaging it cuz it was "in the way".

By Emancipation, my ex was leaving our marriage and took many of my original vinyl/CDs and VHS or damaged much of my collection out of spite.

I'm not sure about his feelings about P now cuz we haven't spoken in several years.

One of my current guys accused me of turning my guests into Prince fans. When the guys come over to drink, hangout & play cards they always have Prince requests. Right now the biggest request is Stopthistrain, I Wonder, Noon Rendezvous, Groovey Potential, Hardrock Lover, Train, Wouldn't U Love 2 Love Me & Ex's Face. My cousin said I'm turning out the straight guys (LMAO)

I don't think I can stay with my partner as roommates if we ever break up. Last time I broke up with my previous ex, I had to move out of state. Too many memories-- good and bad. lol

Wish it was that easy for me. When we lived in L.A. and was just dating, I drag him to a listening party for The Rainbow Children. Gave him a glimpse of the kind of fans Prince have. He couldn't believe everyone in the audience knew Prince's songs and sang along when I took him to a Prince concert the first time. He thought we're a rare breed. lol

I am right there with ya rainbow child! It is amazing my husband and I even got together in the first place, how dare he not get Prince!! Like your partner, he has attended a couple of Prince concerts with me but he was sitting down drinking while I was dancing and singing my ass off. He watches Prince movies with me and has attended screenings of PR and SOTT, but he just tolerates it because he knows Prince is my main man when it comes to music.

+++

Now where I cannot get any progress is getting my husband to love, appreciate and want to listen to Prince's music in the house or in the car. Like you too, my husband does not understand why the loss of Prince is so devastating to me and so profound. I try to explain it to him and family and friends, and I just feel they are like, it's been over 4 months already, shouldn't you be over it by now?

Listening to Prince especially right now is my therapy and he just does not get it.

+++

And he has great music taste, he loves the blues and rock/heavy guitar/alternative and rap.

But he just does not want to listen to Prince. It is so frustrating to try to get someone that is not into Prince or just does not "get" Prince to follow his music. So I have given up, but I will not stop playing Prince as much as I can and will still make my husband attend movie screenings and such.

+++

I feel ya!!

No one I've been with has ever liked the music, but they always seem to add to my Prince collection.

Back in the day one of my boyfriends decided all my tapes needed to be on CD (thank goodness he did!) About a year ago, a different boyfriend (current) decided all my Prince CD's needed to be on vinyl, so ... go figure. smile

I'm waiting for someone to come tell me it all needs to be on tape and start teh vicious cycle all over again.

My boyfriend has said that he does appreciate Prince's guitar skills, as a player himself. Told me he didn't realize til he started dating me how talented the man was.

Sorry 2 hear that. I once caught an ex using my Girls & Boys 12" to lean on/write on & that was bad enough! The thought of someone damaging & taking some of my collection is absolutely awful. Not 2 mention resenting & ridiculing.

Mine did. We actually met on separate occasions at two different Prince concerts (Hit & Run 2000 aftershow and ONA). We're divorced now. Prince died the day after she filed.
