No Prince album is out and out bad, and "NPS" has three out and out classics in "Come On", "The One" and the very creepy "Wasted Kisses". "Mad Sex" is quite funny, if you think he wrote it about that black Spice Girl, but the rest is filler not killer.

"New Power Soul" is WORSE than bad.

It's the last "Prince"/"prince" I bought, & I regret buying it as it is. It sounds very contrived, like he was just going through the motions.

I literally have not played this cd since I bought it, back in '98.

Every great once in a while, this cd catches my eye..

I pull it out of The Stack..

I look at it..

I shake my head 2 or 3 times..

& then I put the cd back in The Stack.

I would sell this cd to a used cd store, if only I could muster the effort to take it to 1 of those stores..
but I'm beyond even making the effort to do that..

so THAT'S how "that bad" NPS is..
I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

Yes its appalling. I know some people like it but those people have probably never heard anything funky outside Prince..and hey this is Prince we are talking about. It just goes to show how low peoples expectations have got if they think NPS is a great album. Prince however was wise to release it under the NPG name as it would've been an insult to the Prince name.

NPS is better than D&P??? I can't believe what I am reading on this thread...lol...The 'Diamond and Pearls' album is FILLED with great songs...

"Cream"---catchy as hell!
"Strollin"---irresistible little number
"Gett Off"---this funk track alone KILLS anything on NPS!
"Insatiable"---I DARE you guys to diss this song smile

Now,list all the great songs on 'NPS',if you can.

I would, but you wouldn't agree with me, so what's the point. I don't like "Insatiable," for example.

Gett Off is a legendary funk song, I'll give you that. But nothing on D&P is as interesting as "Come On" or "Wasted Kisses."

I am not a fan of D&P however it is better than NPS. At least D&P had real drums and some songcraft. NPS is an abomination. Even Come On is overrated simply because it's a potentially classic song dressed in the most godawful production.

It is easily my least favorite album of P's. I do think it has a few good moments (Wasted Kisses is brilliant, but doesn't fit on there at all), but overall it's quite insipid.

The main problem is that the album seems unfinished. Most of the tracks have horrible drum programming, making them sound pathetically tinny. I remember hearing "Freaks On This Side" and "I Like Funky Music" live, and absolutely loving them, but then hearing the disc and thinking that they just lacked something. If the tracks had a more powerful drum sound, I really think that they could have been fleshed out into truly funky jams, but unfortunately they turned out quite tepid. It lacks any real feeling of funk on it. Tracks like "Shoo Bee Doo" and "When U Love Somebody" are just plain bad, far below his abilities (not even as good as stuff he did on For You when he was a teen). Overall, I think the album is a throwaway that suffered from P hurrying up to finish so he could focus on the Chaka Khan & Larry Graham albums.

When I just got it I thought it was really really funky (it's better than Rave). I had it in my cdplayer for almost a year!!
Bad songs though: Freaks on this side & Push it up
the otehr songs are cool, especially the title track!!

Better than Rave?! Hell no!! It may be more cohesive(what isn't) but taking it track by track Rave wipes its ass.

I think its a pretty good album. I wouldn't say its better than The Gold Experience (tho I agree Dolphin is horribly stupid song), but its definately better than D&P, Symbol, and Rave. Its a funky little album...kinda like Come. I like both of 'em equally.

Fave tracks...New Power Soul, Mad Sex, When U Love Somebody, The One, Come On, and Wasted Kisses. The rest is so-so but not unlistenable.

newpowerSoul is one of my favourites... I truly don't get what people don't like about this album. it is a straight up party funk album, excellent excellent excellent. And... nobody is going to convince me the remix of Come On isn't one of the best things he's ever done, actually... best things ever done full stop!

"New Power Soul" was the first Prince album where, after listening to it the first time, I had no interest in listening to it again immediately...there wasn't anything on that CD which grabbed my ears and demanded another listen...While there were a few songs which I felt were decent ("The One", "Wasted Kisses" and "Mad Sex"), none of it made me say to myself "THAT'S why I love Prince..."..even the less-than-stellar albums by Prince have at least a few songs which make me feel that way...New Power Soul just left me saying "Eh..."...

As a stand-alone album, tho, New Power Soul is prolly better than what I give it credit for..50% of the R&B/funk artists in the late 90's coulda put this album out and it would get raves...but, c'mon, this is Prince we're talkin' about...not Sisqo or Bobby Brown...

I didn't like NPS very much..Prince has been influenced too much by his band partners..it's not bad, but it doesn't have enough style (and it's not something that comes in a bottle!!)
while D&P has some unforgettable songs inside (money don't matter 2night, live 4 love, gett off, cream) you can hardly find one that is bad.

Anxiety

I haaated, and I mean HATED this album until just recently, when I revisited it and found a handful of songs that I realized weren't only salvageable, but actually kindasorta...well...GOOD. "Wasted Kisses", "Come On" and "The One" are all nice, and there are a coupla other tolerable songs to enjoy when in the right mood...but I still think that when this album sucks the pipe, it goes full lung.

NPS is a good funky pop/r&b album.

No, it's not on par with his best work, but does everything always have to be a masterpiece? What's wrong with a fun collection of good pop songs?

It sounds lethargic and lifeless to me. Everything doesn't have to be some grand, defining statement to be quality, but it does have to have LIFE. And with the exception of one song it felt like it was one of those albums on life support... flatlining...

NPS does have some good moments, but his heart wasn't in it, and if you recall that he had recently lost his son, you can understand why.

Don't be too hard on it, I see it as a therapy album, something he did did to take his mind off things and ease himself back into the studio.

Plus, as someone said earlier, he was recording the CK and LG stuff as well, bouncing around PP and trying to stop himself from dwelling, so his mind wasn't on the job.

And who knows how his relationship with Mayte was back then.

The result - patchy, but with some wonderful dark, angular arrangements on a few songs.
