Was the marching band at the Super Bowl playing live? It's pretty clear Prince was playing live. But I've always wondered if the matching band was. Does anyone know? Paisley Park is in your heart

As far as I can tell Prince's vocals and guitar were live and Shelby's vocals were live, but everything else was pre-recorded.

It would be highly unusual for an HBCU marching band to take the field to pre-recorded music. Do you have a source for this information or is this just your estimation? | |

Moreover, FAMU's Marching 100 are arguably the best marching band in the world, which is why they were handpicked by Prince for this performance. I think they would be insulted at the notion that they were pantomiming during the Super Bowl. Listen to the band's associate director in the clip linked below. He recounts the iconic moment thus: "This Purple Rain piece was truly spectacular because I'm sure everybody knows the script. I believe so, but there was some heavily overdubbed synths playing. You can hear the stem on Blast From The Past 2.0 Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain. |

I loved the fact he chose to use a marching band and chose more of a rock and roll performance. He knew the audience he was performing for and picked the perfect set for that.
