Did Prince throw some of his best songs out of the window in the early 90s? Think about all the great songs Prince gave away in the early 90s: 101 Hold Me Open Book Love... The Will Be Done Get Blue Allegiance I Hear Your Voice And How ... While he kept stuff like Jughead for himself. I think he could have made some fantasic albums in the early 1990s if he hadn't been so obsessed with trying to keep up with shithop. What do y'all think? |

What, you don't love love love Jughead!!!
I agree with your point, by the way. The songs he gave away, the songs he didn't release, and the versions of songs he didn't release have alwats been perplexing to me! |

Let's remember a couple of things: 1) Prince never intended on releasing every single song he wrote, and 2) he often wrote purposely for other people.
Now whether any of the songs you listed fell under item #2 above,I don't know. But we do sorta know that "Love, Thy Will B Done" was written for Martika, and she loved it so much, she asked for more. We also know that "Martika's Kitchen" was written for her. "5 Women" was written and sent to Joe Cocker. I loved most all of those songs as Prince songs first. My first bootleg ever was Prince In Rock. It had most all the songs you listed on there, plus earlier stuff. So to me, they're still just Prince songs. I do like Patti's take on "I Hear Your Voice". Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. |

I remember when I bought the boot "Yellow" back in the day (it was my second bootleg after the Black Album)... it had a lot of these early 90s songs on them (player, i wonder, open book, don't say u love me, spirit, get blue). the quality of the cd wasn't so great, but I loved the songs and listened to the cd over and over... they still rank as some of my all-time favorite unreleased tracks! (what great memories!) |

I saw an interview where he said that he "didn't always give the record company the best songs".
He didn't say he did it out of spite, but... |

"Allegiance" is pretty much the only track from the bunch that I think could have been on an album of his own.
"Open Book" is great, but I can't really see it fitting with the style of music and image he was conveying at the time.
In general, the outtakes from the early-90s aren't as strong as the ones we've heard from other eras of his. I like the stuff that came out on "The Vault..." release a lot though.

Did he give that to her, or did she just do a cover of it? Can't you cover stuff without permission? Isn't that what makes Chakka mad.
