Wow! WELL ACCORDING TO THIS PRINCE DID NOT HAVE:

PERFECT PITCH

http://www.rollingstone.c...e-20160422

Very difficult for me to believe this.
Not that it diminishes his talent one bit. But these words came from his own mouth. So I guess all the comparisons to Mozart were strictly regarding his creative powers and not the extent of his abilty to actually hear notes without any refernce and know their names.

Or he had it and lied and said that he didn't? I mean I wouldn't put it past him because he liked throwing people off..

Prince in my opinion will go down in history as music's greatest mystery ever!

If he said that he didn't have it, I believe he didn't have it. I don't think he would lie about that.

It would also show his honesty and humility as well, Because he had very a highly developed relative pitch and some people have it to such a high degree that they could fool you into thinking that they had full blown perfect pitch.

Because as soon as they touch their instrument and play any note they could use relative pitch just from that one note and find any other note or chord!

Thats why it can only be TRULY tested in one sitting. I have it and as soon as a note is played, I can name it ditto for car horrns, bells whistles or whatever else.

Quite honestly relative pitch is much more important anyway, but its no biggie. I had ALWAYS heard that he did possess this abilty, so I was just curious.

Prince didn't. I know a musician who played with him about 10 years ago at a jam - he was told not to speak to him beforehand, but then when Prince came on stage with his guitar, the Purple one spoke to him, uttering the words "What key?".

So there you have it, Prince was rubbish and very untalented for not having perfect pitch.

He had perfect pitch, just another example of him being humble.

Isn't relative pitch more common, anyway? Not that either is an especially common thing to have -- I kinda am not surprised, anyway, and I can't see this making any real difference with a man as disciplined about his career as Prince was. Well, okay, great relative pitch certainly helps one play 20 odd instruments. Lol

Prince had the best voice in music, as far as I am concerned. He sang like a natural, as a bird.

Can somebody explain what Prince used all those foot pedals on the floor for. I've seen him use one while playing guitar. What is its purpose and why some many pedals? Anybody know?

They are affects: wha-whas, delays, choruses, distortions, reverbs. Every guitar player has usually a lot of them. Some have one machine that does everything, but it's harder to use live 'cause you can't always see right with the stage light, so it's better to have them separate, and of different colors, so that you can spot them easily.

About the perfect pitch: it's not really useful for a musician, relative pitch is definitely more important. If someone plays out of tune you can easily realize it, and the key you are playing in is decided before. Knowing the exact pitch of the note that has been played it's not such an essential nformation to have.

Let's talk about the other part of that article:

"The photographer, an attractive woman, was dismissed after only five minutes. She left the meeting in tears. Earlier, she'd shown me her portfolio. In many of the shots, she was nude. That was her thing. She wanted to take photos of herself nude next to Prince (I assumed by some kind of time-delay mechanism), but Prince wasn't having it. "

This is what takes my head off every time. The voice alone would be enough, it's just stunning, in range, in variety of cadence, in emotion. You add the guitar playing and I'm already like whaaaaat, and then the ridiculous implausible beauty and I'm done. And that's before you get to the unbreakable funkiness, the bandleading, the prolific songwriting, the incredible clothes, the dancing, the jumping of pianos and the being the sexiest motherfucker in the world. It's absurd. I still don't believe he really existed.

Not like I love my guitar....

The fact that no one bates an eyeball about this kind of stuff on this board. Some freak came to the press junket and wanted to take buck naked pics with Prince at Paisley Park.

Seems he had crazy ass chicks coming at him all the time.
