Now that we're on the subject of The Black Album, I'm wondering: was it really that good or were people just excited to hear something they weren't supposed to hear? I remember that back then, the non-release of this album was a big hype and because of that, everybody wanted to hear it. Forbidden fruits are always the best, aren't they? I had it first on cassette, then on bootleg CD and it was exciting to listen to and I loved it. But when it finally came out, I was like, why bother. It's old news. I bought the LP, but now that it's not forbidden anymore, I don't think it's that special anymore. Just another collection of funk jams. For me, it hasn't stood the test of time very well. [Edited 9/6/16 2:11am]

I wonder about that too. Ultimately it depends on who you ask - and when you ask them haha imo.

.

I have gotten used to it - but I also keep this in mind. It's not just a collection of funk jams - it's Prince in the SOTT - Lovesexy era - which is actually a great era. One thing is though that hype is too big for it. I knew about it but hadn't listedned to it thoroughly yet. I expected so much after finding out about the hype - listended fully and was disappointed as all hell.

.

Later on I listened again - not expecting a whole lot, without all the perceptions that it was supposed to be legendary, and found "damn this is a really good LP!".

.

That's how I stopped worrying and learned to love The Black Album. Don't sweat the hype - it always gets in the way. ALWAYS - no matter what album we're talking about.

Bob is pretty dark and in keeping with the album title - anyone who said Prince wasn't gangsta...never heard this...

"You seeing that bitch motherfucker again
You know who I'm talking about
That slicked back paddy with all the gold in his mouth
Don't try to play me for yesterday's fool
'Cause I'll slap your ass into the middle of next week"

Never listen to this song if you are feeling jealous/insecure about your woman!!! Guaranteed arguement!!!

Super is a fave for the line....

"Maybe I'll see you next Thursday night, maybe I won't
But that's alright, 'cause in my possession, there's a signed confession
That says, I was the best you ever had..."

I keep a stack of them in my bedside cabinet lol

I can say that my two least favorites are Dead On It and Bob George. Apart from those 2, which I can totally listen to and enjoy, the whole album is strong - real strong.

.

This is likely since I like hip hop a lot and while I don't care about the diss track stuff I just am not convinced of his ability to make hip hop music yet. He'd get there - but it was a little too late by then.
