Tyka seriuosly thinks she is doing the right thing...

She needs to be educated on copyright in general and on the specific Prince situation, also w.r.t. promotion and such.

She just took down another one of mine. It was like 13 secs of Andre playing. No singing. Wow. Maybe they're gonna release the concert? There were tons of cameras there. Otherwise this last one makes no sense. Removing a 13 second instrumental? hilarious

That's ridiculous. 13 seconds is fair use. And it's bullying the little guys because there are a gazillion covers of Purple Rain and they're not being deleted. Whoever is doing it doesn't want to argue with Springsteen's 5M views. Or his power to say No.

I tend to think there is a small group of people trying to organize an international business enterprise, and these people have a very small window in which to get it all together, if you know what I mean. IMO the tribute concert is a mistake. They need a year to sort things out. Yes, the tax bill is looming - thank you, Prince, for no will or trust document - but it feels like they are uncoordinated because they honestly don't know the extent of what they've got to do.

Why doesn't the Estate establish a Prince site on YouTube, showing everything it can legally get its hands on? If it wants to maximize revenue, it should be promoting Prince, not pulling him out of the public eye.

Exactly!

Cuz being on YouTube is like being on the radio these days and it's free advertising.

NPG is going after FB video posts too.

The time for this is over. The only way the estate will maximise income is to let things slide. Keep Prince out there. Otherwise the Paisley Park museum and the occasional album of unreleased music appealing to the hardcore will not be enough and Prince will fade way quicker than he should. confused

Yep. And that's why whenever I find stuff on YT I save it down as fast as possible. Everything I've saved down so far is either an interview or live performance. I wish the estate would get on releasing some live performances. My wallet is ready and waiting.

I know, right???

Dear Tyka, I'm retired with disposable income and lots of time to enjoy your brother's music in any form you choose. I, like most P fans, simply want an uncomplicated way to get high quality P estate authorized products. PLEASE TAKE MY MONEY!!!!!

Our IG account for our music studio was shut down for 3 CI strikes and none of them had actual Prince music, video or likeness. On my copy infringment notices, the email was reported as npgrecords2@gmail.com (which seemed fishy to me - why doesn't NPG have their own domain??? I suspeceted it was some college intern simply working youtube, IG, facebook, etc all day looking for anything Prince related and copyright infringing them or some whacked out fan trying to "Keep Prince safe from all the evil people trying to use him" - yeah, there's a few of you on here)

Strike 1 - I transcribed the solo section of "I wish u heaven" and recorded the 3 guitar parts over a drum loop in garage band and videod the tracks playing on my Mac. This pissed me off because Dweezil Zappa had liked the video and I was sooooooo happy and showing everyone that MrDweezilZappa gave us a like.

Strike 2 - Played the solo to "the question of u". No song, just my guitar and a metronome click. When that CI came through, I was hot! Becuase you know, I'm just a fan boy learning his tunes because I have an itch to play them for fun.

Strike 3 - I was pissed now, so I recorded the turn around from "Peach" and when I hit the final power chord, I played it like Eric Clapton does, with my middle finger held up high and I flipped the camera off and typed something snarky like "Try to copyright a blues turn around NPG. If you do, a few thousand musicians are going to have something to say about Prince playing their turn around". Boom! third strike and IG closed our studio account.

What did I learn? Post the same videos, just don't hashtag Prince or the name of the song. Which kinda defeats the purpose of sharing with other fans. So now, I play a solo or a bass line I say something like "Check out this cool solo in B minor" or "Playing a funky bassline this morning to warm up". Sad.

Like a G flat major with an E in the Bass

One of my friends was painting a portrait in a video posted to FB. Music was playing in the background. FB pulled her video because of the background music. It is crazy out there now.

Elvis passed in 1977. Youtube is full of Elvis videos. The videos have not hurt his museum or sales of his merchandise at all. He gets new followers all the time. My grandchildren like Elvis and they had not even been thought of when Elvis walked on this earth. Having Youtube flooded with Elvis more than keeps his memory alive!

Andy Gibb is another favorite from years gone by. He passed in 1988 - only 30 years old. He also gets new followers. Not as many as Elvis, but the videos have kept his memory alive also.

Prince's family should be careful. Having Prince on Youtube could only be a good thing!!

Oh come opn, can we stop with this nonsense that the concert will fund the tax bill? The taxes will be dozens of millions, at least. There is NO WAY one single concert will pay for that.

.

That tax bill will be paid by the deal they'll make with Warners of whomever WRT future releases.

Exactkly.

But what entity will pay ~USD 150 million for a stack of tapes and some real estate?

Then the entity could promise a percentage of the new sales to the heirs.

I.e.: the heirs get NOTHING at first, just get their taxbills paid.

Then later, when there are sales, they get some $.

Will the heirs accept such a situation?

.

Or what creative alternative will they think of?
