Call the Law brings back better memories, especially of the last night in Rotterdam in 1992, when it was played as a surprise encore when people were already leaving the venue. But overall, good songs are hard to find on this disc filled with raps and instrumentals. The only decent song on this album is 2gether.

I think the entire album is tragic but if I had to choose a least bad song, I would say Call The Law, even though I really really dislike it.

I must be alone in loving this Album, the horn work is just Sublime. Whatever you think of Tony M, it's unquestionably his finest hour. Probably love the main riff, parts 1,2,3 the most. Deuce and a quarter, Goldie's Parade. Played this Album so much, definitely a grower.

The band sounds gorgeous on it, no denying that. But as far as songwriting goes, there's nothing special on it.

I think, in terms of statements about race, it is one of Prince's most direct Albums. Lyrically it's very different from the average Prince Album, part of what I found fascinating about Prince. True, some jams are purely funk without deeper meaning but that's cool too 😉

I loved that NPG live band sound. . Really like Deauce & A Quarter, Black MF, Call The Law and Johnny but if I had to choose one it would be 2gether.

I've heard every prince album but. How does it compare to exodus and new power soul? The world's problems like climate change can only be solved through strategic long-term thinking, not expediency. In other words all the govts. need sacking!

I listened to this again the other month. If you can somehow manage to keep your feelings on Tony M. at bay, the music itself is some of the smoothest yet completely organic sounds of his career. Probably my favorite "New Power Generation" album. [Edited 8/27/16 14:33pm]

Hmmmmm I think you could do a lot worse in Prince's catalog than Johnny. . I like Call the Law - it was also a good b side for MDM2N. Count me in. It went unnoticed but it was kind of hip at the time: it was the beginning of those few years when jazz+funk+hip-hop were the hype. There was Miles' Doo Bop of course but also Ronny Jordan, Guru, US3, Buckshot Le Fonque, Brooklyn Funk Essentials, the Red Hot + Blue compilation and so on. I was glad to see Prince embark in this movement (and quite early, mind you). + Prince had a very interesting approach: virtually everyone else used programmed hip-hop beats as the basis for their tracks, then added jazz and funk elements over it. Prince made an album without a single drum machine or sequencer, with live drums and a live band, then added rap on the music. And yeah, Tony's rapping was good in the studio, his problem was the hysterical, awful shouting on stage. I don't really have a fave track on GN but I love it as a whole. The Slaughterhouse is probably the closest Prince has done to a bad album, it might even be bad. The Chocolate Invasion isn't far behind. Hit n Run 1 is a masterclass by comparison. . ''The Slaughterhouse'' has "The Daisy Chain" on it. . "The Chocolate Invasion" has "Underneath the Cream" . These songs are so good that they alone are enough to keep these albums out of the bad category. . I don't know ''HITnRUN Phase One" very well yet, but it does have ''1000 X's & O's" on it, and that is enough. . I prefer to keep the focus on the music people like rather than the music that people don't like. . . . I think that it is not as good as ''Exodus'', but it is way better than "New Power Soul''. . It's not as overproduced as the other two. No sound effects, no segues, no drum machines. This is the only NPG album that actually deserves that name, in the sense that you hear the band play. The other two NPG albums are just Prince albums in disguise. And like I said before, the NPG as a band sound great. You can hear what a tight, funky group of musicians they were. But you have to like Tony M to appreciate this. [Edited 8/29/16 4:52am]
