Now, it doesn't mean he was celibate the entire time he claimed that was his lifestyle. To me, it means he was working toward that kind of oneness.

Personally, I think he was trying very hard to be celibate. He was imperfect and human and sexy so I'd imagine taking that part of his nature was difficult, but I find it sexy that he saw a part of his character that he felt he wanted to master and was trying to do that and didn't seem ashamed of it, even when he backsliding. He embraced whatever he was doing.

The tipoff to me is the way he talked about the energy transforming into a different kind of energy focused on something else. The way he worded it I truly believe that he was speaking from experience, not from something he read in a book. He'd experienced that kind of shift. It doesn't mean he didn't have desires and that he was always celibate, but I agree with you that he was trying.

And that's okay. It actually fits his personality. It fits that he would try celibacy as a single man in his 50s, given his interest in spiritual unions (with God and others). But he pretty much admitted that it was a struggle he didn't always master.
