I thought he said somewhere that he was living a celibate lifestyle, but was not always very good it...

Can't remember that interview but it would have included that 8-year period.

I'd look it up but I don't really care all that much. My take on it is that he tried. I can believe he was celibate the last two years because he had that quality I've seen in others who are celibate for spiritual reasons. But, of course, if I spoke to him at length in person I might not have thought that. It's just what I get from interviews and his demeanor and such.

I think this is one area where he may have been confronted with the realities of aging. So it may have been easier to at this point in his life - and I can get with the passage of time.... sex becomes about more intimate things than just flesh against flesh....so I think he could have been celibate - that doesnt mean tho he wasnt sexual...

He didn't claim any particular number of celibate years in the 2014 RS interview. This is the quote:

"You've said that you're celibate.

Yeah, I'm celibate.

In a 2008 USA Today interview he also claimed he was "single, celibate and sexy" (http://www.usatoday.com/s.../83341038/ ) so maybe the span between those 2 interviews is where the 8 years came from (though it was 6).

My personal opinion? The dude was not celibate in the monk-like sense of the word, and certainly not for multiple years. Even in 2014, he only claimed to "go back and forth"

Definitely. He let that energy loose when he played the guitar, celibate or not.

Yes, this. Celibate does not mean asexual. And if it's because of a spiritual journey or progress, it can kind of merge into the same kind of intimacy. I think he desired this.

Now, it doesn't mean he was celibate the entire time he claimed that was his lifestyle. To me, it means he was working toward that kind of oneness.
