Construction on Paisley Park going on now

This is an outrage! Paisley Park is a construction site right now? They are changing it ???? Why did they not tell us this before we spent $100. on the tickets?? Does anyone live around there that can tell me how bad it is? sad sad
I asked Prince what he was planning to do. He told me , I'm going to look for the ladder. I asked him what that meant. All he said was, sometimes it snows in April. - book D.M.S.R.

I did read that the entryway is going to be made wider.

I think next year there will be another parking area added.

Gheezus. This a bid'ness. You ain't too far gone to see that yet.

It's going to be a museum. You think they're just going to sweep up a bit, and open it up? No. Things have to be changed for public entry, and set up for tours, etc.

According to the business plan:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

There are more project documents here but I don't know how to read building plans so I don't know what they all mean.

I was just there. Lots of work going on inside. Lots of vehicles. They were removing some of the windows. I also saw that they were doing some work in the NPG Music Club room. It was sad because as far as I am concerned Paisley is like a gravesite right now and it was hard to go there to pay my respects and to see all the work being done. I suppose they have to do some things to make it a museum.

I'm conflicted on this. Part of me understands why people think it's too soon. Another part of me thinks it will be good for closure. To be honest unless there was some criminal activity that someone is going to jail over I don't need to know any more about his death investigation. Let the man RIP and let's celebrate his and stop mourning how he died. If this tribute concert and opening PP can do that I'm all for it.

I agree with you, I'm supposed to go next year and I have mixed emotions about it. The man hasn't been gone five months and to me it seems everything is happening too fast. And I agree with TrivialPursuit that it is definitely business and they want to act while fan emotions are still strong. But another side of me says they should have waited a year out of respect.

It was Prince's personal recording studio... it's being opened to the public. That means complying with relivant health and safety legislation. Everything has to be wheelchair accessable so doorways may need to be made wider & ramps added.

I'm not sure why they would remove windows though? Perhaps they need a tougher type of glass? or simply don't want people being able to see in.

The way the estate is talking it's like they're expecting Elvis numbers to visit PP and I just can't see it myself.

Five months? That's like half a year, yeah? Maybe changing the perspective on the time thats passed will help.

I agree. IIRC (and I possibly don't), the estimated numbers given for expected guests to PP exceeded Graceland numbers which I thought was...well, I just don't see that happening, at least not consistently for years and years.

This is true. Making it accessible to all and for sure adding more restroom facilities, etc. It's going to be strange, though, going in there for the first time when the new construction is done but still having the memories and images in your mind of how PP used to be, how it used to look. sad

It doesn't bother me because all of this would have needed to happen if Prince was still here. It's not like they're doing this because they want to change the core of what PP is.

Ok - so Prince had hundreds of people there at a time for events and NOW they need to make over things?

I am not sure I even want to go now b/c as friends we have a picture of what PP is and now thats going to change?

Perhaps make the tour groups smaller and more manageable. I thought they might put down a plastic runner on the carpet, or provide shoe covers, but taking out windows and changing things around?

Hmm....I guess we wait and see how it all turns out. Like others have said - business - the business of Prince. So sad.

I don't know why some hundred year old houses are virtually untouched and open for tours, and are

'museums' but Prince's house needs an overhaul? Case in point - Graceland Mansion. https://youtu.be/QcvHNmJ1Dz0

Makes no sense to me.

Anyone in going on a tour in October, please report back.

Does anyone have the source of when Prince said he wanted PP to be a museum -actual quote/interview?

Thanks. Peace, love and healing

Yes. I'm going Oct. 7th, day 2 of opening. I was really hoping to inhale some air Prince exhaled but seems with so much construction the air will be flushed out.

I thought they would make changes but I thought they would wait until January. One reason I wanted to go asap was to go before any changes were made.

I don't know if there's an actual quote but Dr Funkenberry said Prince was working on it. I believe Anil Dash said the same thing. Anyway people just need to take a deep breath. The property is not getting a massive overhaul. Widening some doorways and various improvements for fire safety are not massive overhauls.

Yes. It used to be a private recording studio and occasional residence. It's now being turned into a tourist attraction of sorts.

I am not sure I even want to go now b/c as friends we have a picture of what PP is and now thats going to change?

Of course you still want to go. We all do. By the sounds of things they're not really changing much and most of whats been said is speculation. But obviously opening to the public things have to change... toilets, gift shop, cafe - are the usual types of thing you'd find in a museum. I've never been to Graceland but I'd magine that's what you'd find.

Graceland, judging from the website is like some bizarre shopping mall/theme park hybrid. I really hope Paisley Park retains some class.

Personally I'd have rather PP continued to operate as a recording studio + performance venue. I liked the thought that bands and artists would have "recorded at Paisley Park Studios" on their album sleeves. To me that's a better legacy than being able to wander around an empty complex. But it's not my decision.

I agree. Isn't there a way to do it all?

Tours (in small groups, so as to *not* have to change much) during the summer, recording during the off months, and performances all year long? Why can't they do that?

I mean really, who is going to tour Minneapolis in the winter??

Toure just posted on twitter about Paisley Park confirming that it will become a museum, performance space and recording studio.

Also that there will be "new" Prince music next year!

,

Isn't tourism off or very slow during the frozen months up there? I presume during that timeframe they will increase or start studio time. Probably even have late night/early morning(typical non-business hours) studio time available year round. Studio time would make good money for the facility with proper management.

The notion of Graceland running the gig irks me mostly because Graceland itself irked me. I felt like i was strolling through some dead dudes living room. This project seems fundamentally different though, so my misgivings are probably unwarranted.

If I did make the trek, I'd want there to be collectibles for sale entailing gift shops. I'd like proper facilities so more restrooms are probably in order to accommodate modest traffic. What was creepy about Graceland was if felt like you were invading something frozen in time. The notion here seems to be a living, working facility that promotes the culture of music in many forms. Production, consumption, exhibition, large and small. That's great IMO. A little beyond the scope of what the 'shoe coverings' I think I saw mentioned could handle. I hope people don't want or that the facility doesn't become some kind of penetrable time capsule. Ew. Phooey on that. Prince was music. The facility should reflect that. Not anything along the lines of a time capsule.

Though it wasn't at the original site, the Stax museum was a much better facility IMO, especially in relation to what Graceland is.
