For Charlene Friend, recent reports that prescription pills found hidden in an Aleve bottle at Prince's Paisley Park estate could have been counterfeit drugs containing the powerful narcotic fentanyl, is yet another painful reminder of how the late singer hid his drug use from those around him.

During their years together, Friend, 44, who was sued by her former boyfriend in 2003 when she attempted to sell some of his gifts to her, insists that she never witnessed Prince do drugs.

But in the decades that have elapsed since their split – and his death on April 21 from an overdose of the opiate Fentanyl – she's begun to understand just how much of his life he kept hidden.

"He would sometimes stay up for five days at a time without sleep, food or even water, going nonstop back and forth to the studio," recalls Friend. "I had to sneak in catnaps to keep from passing out from exhaustion. The first time that happened, I asked him, 'How do you do this?'"

Prince, says Friend, just smiled, stared deep into her eyes and said: "Angel food. Food of the spirit, not of the flesh."

Several years after their split, Friend was speaking with Prince's half-brother Duane Nelson, who had spent time working as head of security at Paisley Park, about how the singer was able to stay awake for days at a time.

She says Nelson, who died in 2013, told her that Prince's stamina had nothing to do with "angel food" and everything to do with narcotics. "'We call it the cocaine diet,'" Friend says Duane Nelson told her.

When he finally did allow himself to sleep, Friend recalls that he would cover the windows with aluminum foil, crank the heat up to 80 degrees or higher and make sure the room was pitch-black.

that's a weird coincidence, for two people to mention the tin foil on the windows.
sinead o connor mentions it in her song 'where have you been', which is about the
time she went to paisley. now, she always talked a lot of shit about prince, but i'm
just saying, that's a coincidence right there, for two people to mention the tinfoil.
it's not something you'd just grab out of thin air, is it?

as far as drugs or illness or habit goes, i'm still just neutral to most of it. i'll wait
until this time next year before making up my mind. all i take from these stories,
like the bit about the tin foil on the windows, is that there always are two sides to
every story. not every story that doesn't suit us or is a lie.

meanwhile, she could have got her tidbit about it from sineads song. although i'm
fairly certain only 100 people bought sineads last album shame though, since
it's a good one.

I wish I was taking all the drugs Prince took whilst also not eating, drinking or sleeping because let me tell you I'd fucking love to be that prolific, that professional & that talented!!! Oh & let me crank the heat up in my room too because that will just add to how well I work! All whilst NO ONE around me suspects a thing.

He didn't eat, drink or sleep and was full of drugs (that nobody ever saw him takez). Ha, when you hear some of this stuff it's a wonder he lived to 57. Shame that People would even publish this. I thought they were better than most tabloids. Hopefully this gets moved to the gossip thread or gets locked. Last thing I come here for is BS gossip.

Well I'm done with this thread now (same with the painkiller sticky thread). I won't deal in stupid gossip, especially the man isn't here to defend himself. All I'll say is P must have been superman to be able to do all he did in his career while not eating, drinking or sleeping and secretly abusing narcotics and opioids.

How about acceptance, not condemning and embracing the genius he was without judgment. It'll lighten your burden.

--- No one said he did not have a drug problem. He was seeing a doctor for withdrawals for pain meds that would mean he had a problem. Kind of hard to hide a Coke problem going back 20 years from more than 100 or so people who say they never saw him use drugs back then. Coke is going to change your demeanor and know one has said anything about extreme eractic behavior. I will bet money that pain pill thing started with his surgery. No one can function at P level on loads of drugs for 30 years Who can go a week without drinking water or sleeping. Even Sheila said when sleep he was a like vampire so he did long sleep marathons. Daune and Mrs.Friend are not good resources for information.
