Anyone seen/heard Prince's rendition of "the whole of the moon"

Well, its good stuff. I won't link it. But check it out if you haven't seen it. Apparently, its him on the bass. I know its not his song, and the original by the Waterboys (which I just listened to ) is quite good. But Prince's is really edgy and topical and a great arrangement.

Apparently, the song was about Prince in the first place. WOW..

I actually bought this in 1985. It's become debatable if it was about P. But in the run out groove on the 12 inch was etched" For Prince, who saw the whole of the moon"

Have you heard Prince's. He changed up some of the lyrics. Bringing racial elements to it. One of the words he rhymed with "moon" was pretty edgy for later-day Prince.

This is really interesting because the song fits him so well. I don't get why the band deny it's about him though?

I would imagine that it's not about him, why would you distrust the band's word if they explicitly state that that's the case?

Shit you're completely right, I completely missed that, apologies. EnDoRpHn the article you quoted says that the song was heavily inspired by Prince's music but it doesn't say as far as I can tell that the lyrics are specifically about or addressed to him. This FAQ on The Waterboys webpage is cited on Wikipedia as proving that the song isn't about Prince, the site is no longer up but can be accessed through the Wayback Machine:

Who said the lyrics are about him? Did they literally need to saying, "Thank you Mr. Nelson, we love you and wish we were as great as you?"

Tributes take lots of shapes and forms. They don't have to be so literal.

Luxlove initially said that they didn't get why the band deny it's about him, which I understood to mean that the lyrics are specifically about Prince, which is why I responded saying that I doubted that was the case since Mike Scott had denied it in the past. So it's possible that I misunderstood exactly what Luxlove was saying but I assumed that they meant that the character who is addressed in the song was literally Prince, so I thought that the subject of the lyrics was indeed what we were discussing.

That wasn't directed at you specifically, my impression is that there's some larger dispute out there about whether the song is a tribute. Clearly, based on the article I cited and the point made by someone else about the annotation on the 12", it was a tribute. I'm guessing some Prince hater out there just dislikes the association.

i asked the writer himself who is a big prince fan but he said the lyrics/song isn't about him, but he heavily influenced the bands work at that time

prince also did a solo piano version of whole of the moon at ronnies scotts which i didn't recognise at first, even though i read the setlist before the show. it's also different to the version that streamed online

karl wallinger did a bunch of prince inspired tracks with his band world party

I was flabbergasted when I heard Prince cover it - cool and funky and different "I saw the whole of the moon" so he obviously heard that the song was about him razz

Absolutely love P's version of it. I did run across an article with The Waterboys and they say it was written as a tribute to Prince.

Scott later defines “Big Music” as “A metaphor for seeing God’s vision in the world.” And the song that brought it to the wider British public is one of the most striking of the Waterboys’ career. “The Whole Of The Moon” is a synth-heavy sonic tribute to Prince, its guitars largely buried deep in the mix. Bowie, The Beatles and crashing brass fanfares are there too, matching Scott’s lyric about reaching “too far, too high”.

Not really, there's a definite distinction to be made between the song functioning as a musical tribute to Prince in it's style (which the Uncut article you posted indeed proved to be the case) and the lyrics of the song literally being addressed to Prince, which I believe is what most of the speculation about the song revolves around, in a similar manner to the speculation surrounding Carly Simon's You're So Vain. Whether this is the case or not is hard to say, the FAQ I posted suggested that it wasn't whereas the dedication on the 12 inch seems to suggest it is. IDK I personally think that the subject of the song is probably a kind of hazy composite of several people, Prince probably being one of them.

It's actually funny that P and The Waterboys traded songs: The Whole Of The Moon for Purple Rain.

I was at that show. It was Prince alone on the stage playing the bass and singing. They put the whole show without this song on his souncloud page. It was advertised as a Dance Rally 4 Peace. It was a week before the Rally 4 Peace show in Baltimore.

the pre-recorded backing track is interesting to my ears, sounds very unlike a prince production - does anyone know if it is a sampled beat?
