I would so have loved to have gone to this but I left LA last week and am now back in Scotland it would have been great to speak to others about our feelings - no-one I know here understands! I really do need to feel some sort of closure with this. I haven't listened to any other music for 4 months & still get waves of overwhelming sadness when I think of what happened to him. I hope anyone who does go will tell us all about it! I'm sure it will be lovely.

What kind of notice is that? I guess it's just for local fans. I asked Prince what he was planning to do. He told me , I'm going to look for the ladder. I asked him what that meant. All he said was, sometimes it snows in April. - book D.M.S.R.

Lots of upset bosses tomorrow at workplaces. Cost should he a bit higher to ensure it's not a madhouse. I wish they'd televise these things. Then we could all attend. For $5 they should. Still, I'm happy they're having it. Any purple togetherness is a plus. A big A+.

Thank you so much June7 for posting this. I live east of Hollywood/LA area so I could make this trip and would have. But Monday is not good for me and the time, plus the notice stinks : (
I am down for any So Cal events especially in Hollywood/LA/OC area and would be happy to go and report back to The Org on the happenings. So keep me in mind for any future events.
Sux, the Roxy is a good lil club, so much history there!
Peace - "A strong spirit transcends rules." - Prince

So did the Roxy organize this event, or was it organized by others and the Roxy is merely the venue hosting it? Seems like a strange time of day, and on a weekday, to hold such an event; so many people who'd maybe like to go can't due to work and other obligations. I don't understand this but hope whoever goes has a good experience

I would love to go, as I live in Cali, but I am not in the area. So for those who can and do attend, I hope you have a great time and have fun. Erin Smith

I know the notice was short.
I know the venue choice of having at The Roxy was strange. I know midday on a Monday was also not the best time for all involved. But, I am not in control of such things and I think it was done to coincide with those already here in conjunction with the already scheduled Oscar Screening of Purple Rain. So, I'm going to go into a little bit of detail as to how this played out. Manuela Testolini, Prince's former wife, had something to do with the Academy's scheduling and presenting of the screening. She and Val (yes our Val) were talking about how great it would be to do something 'for the fans who didn't get to go to any 'official events' held by family and such. Manuela thought it would be nice to screen the actual memorial held in Minneapolis last May and explained to Val that if she could find a venue maybe we can make this happen. Val, went into SuperVal mode and was able to get The Roxy to host it. But, these things aren't free - so, to secure it for when all would be in town, and still afford the venue - Monday seemed fitting. Manuela, in the meantime, was calling everybody who appeared in the memorial to grant her the release to show their portion of their eulogy. Those who signed off were included, those who didn't or couldn't be reached were edited out. The reason it was strongly worded and we were adamant at the memorial to put all phones down was to ensure that absolutely no filming of the film be done, so she wouldn't get sued or so that one day, if needed, all the footage can one day be seen. Having now viewed it myself, I must say, the memorial was definitely helpful in releasing some sadness and furthering my ability to cope a little better. By all means, it did not end it, but the act of 'mourning' with other like minds did, in fact, help tremendously. With Val securing the venue, a $5 donation was asked of those attending to help offset the cost, and it was agreed that the Roxy could offer drinks for sale to assist in their costs as well. Note: they created a special drink called "The Beautiful One" and offered it for purchase that day. I heard it was truly delicious. The screening went off wonderfully and it was truly a pleasure to hear his friends and family remember - a standout in this regard was Tavis Smalley, whose remembrances were funny, brilliant and full of emotion. We cried, we laughed, we prayed and we applauded all with Prince in our minds and hearts. It was beautiful. Manuela sat on the stage afterward and explained how hard this was for her, and also offered a little glimpse into her life with Prince and her life now. She was honest and spoke only highly of Prince and mentioned that earlier this year (or late last year - I don't remember the specifics) she and Prince ran into each other at The Roxy (during the divorce proceedings so it had to be much longer - damn my memory!!) and decided to go out and talk - where they proceeded to get into his limo and for over three hours drove around LA all night talking and sharing and making sure each other were okay. It was beautiful - and so was she, both in person and inside her heart. This memorial was not easy for her, as she explained that it is almost harder the second time around. About 20-30 or so people attended - more than we thought for such short notice and we all signed a banner that Val was going to be taking to Minneapolis on Friday. Pictures of the event have been posted at our Facebook page (which should be easy to find, but if not I'll try to link it to this response too). Here's the link for the pics It ended about three hours after it started which included a nice montage of music and thoughts of him by others, including our own Militant in a voiceover representing The Org. I wish it were done in a more timely fashion, allowing everybody who wanted to go - to go, but, you only get what you get, and you make the best of it and move on. We did just that. Val took the stage after Manuela, explaining some of this process, and how all this affected her and Ben. I was witness to, and a part of, a beautifully small gathering of people who cared for Prince and who were able to say goodbye in their own little way. I'm glad I was able to go, and I hope this little review of the day helped explain some of your queries as well as offer a little bit of closure to you as well. Thank you for your questions and concerns, and know that we love all of you and will always try to include you all in whatever way we can when we get word of anything happening for Prince, and it is a public forum. Thank you - June7 |
