Here Comes Mr. Nelson

Most of you probably aren’t familiar with a 1941 movie called “Here Comes Mr. Jordan.” It’s the story of a boxer (Joe Pendleton) who’s going down in a plane crash, when his guardian angel (Messenger 7013) snatches his soul before the plane hits the ground. His body dies (of course – his soul is already gone), but when he gets to the pearly gates, he protests that he can’t be dead – that he’s in the pink and scheduled to fight for the championship. Come to find out – he really wasn’t supposed to die. He was supposed to survive the crash and live another 50 years!

Joe says, “I told you so.” And Mr. Jordan (the movie version of St. Peter) scolds Messenger 7013 for acting too hastily, and tells him to put Joe back in his body – quickly.

Unfortunately, by the time they discover the mistake, Max (Joe’s manager) has had him cremated – so there’s no body for him to go back to.

I thought of this movie as soon as I heard about the mislabeled pills. Don't you see? It was all just a terrible, terrible mistake. Prince didn’t mean to die – and he couldn’t have been meant to die. But by the time they found out about the mistake – the autopsy was done and Tyka had him cremated. There was no body for him to come back to! He said that getting back into his body during his earlier OD on the place was the hardest thing he’d ever done. Right – until the next time.

How does the movie end? Well, since he gets to go back, Joe tries out a couple of other bodies. He comes back first as a gangster who was murdered by his wife and an associate. Turns out, this guy really does have to die. But in the meantime, Joe’s gotten his body in shape to become a fighter and he’s fallen in love – so he really doesn’t want to leave the gangster’s body. Mr. Jordan tells him that if he doesn’t give it up, he’ll die, too. He says that if the relationship is meant to be, Bette (the woman) and Joe will find each other again.

So they put him in the body of another boxer – a man who was shot in the ring when he refused to take a dive. They get there quickly enough that there’s time for Joe to assume the Murdoch’s body without any lapse in time. And Mr. Jordan tells Joe that this is it, from that moment on, he will be Murdoch – and all memory of himself as Joe will be gone.

The boxer formerly known as Joe is now Murdoch. Murdoch and Bette meet – and she senses something familiar in him. The movie ends with them leaving the boxing venue to get a bite to eat. Mr. Jordan smiles and watches them go.

This is where I’m at, guys. Four months later, I still can’t believe that Prince isn’t somewhere in the world – just maybe in a different guise. That it’s all been a bad dream or a horrible mistake. This can’t be how it was meant to end.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
