Great question!!! I don't have the kind of money it takes to purchase bootlegs, so I never buy them... BUT, I'm sure people could very easily have one person buy the boot, and copy it for a bunch of others at a reduced rate. Desperate times call for desperate measures, I suppose. that's where it gets INTERRESTING. i know people who Trade Boots here & there & i just never got involved with that. i thought that if P was still makin' Music there would b "No Reason" 2 buy or even Trade Boots but if it were like 5yrs or so & no music i'd b like "No!!!" then off 2 get me some Boots 2 Rock! I don't believe that Prince will ever fully 'retire'.
However, I do think that it is possible that both his spiritual and marital commitments will now take precedence. Both of these factors could affect his level of output. However, I still believe he will release music, just not as often. Besides, this year he is already confirmed to appear on the Jimi Hendrix tribute album and he has contributed a new song to Kip Blackshire's forthcoming album. The man released 4 albums on CD, plus another album and an EP by download last year. Plus he undertook a world tour. Despite this level of productivity, people were still not satisfied. They still filed official complaints against the NPGMC. I percieve both the piano CD and the live box-set to be an attempt by Prince to please his 'fans' by responding directly to their requests. Those were the releases that people were asking for. If you look at the threads on this site a little over a year ago you'll see confirmation of this. Therfore I think Prince has likely realised that he will never please all the people all of the time so he might as well please himself. Perhaps he no longer wishes to be isolated in the studio 24/7 producing 20 albums per year. Perhaps he no longer wishes to sacrifice time and energy into a music club that many do not appreciate. Perhaps he should live his life and we should live ours and if we happen to be bestowed with any musical 'gifts' we should just appreciate them. As for Prince "retiring", or whatever, who really believes this anymore? Now, anytime things get quiet from his camp, people start speculating. IF Mani is pregnant, and IF he is relocating to Toronto, then he probably has more on his plate than typical. We've all grown so used to Prince being overly prolific, that when he isn't we think something must be going on. He's getting older, and may not want to work at the same breakneck pace that he has in the past. I certainly think that there is nothing wrong with this whatsoever. In fact, it may mean that the quality of music that he produces will improve. Now, in the meantime, just relax and enjoy all that music that he's produced over the years (as well as all the other great stuff that's out there). Life goes on, regardless of what Prince is doing. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

I think Prince has returned to much of his earlier, reclusive ways since his divorce from Mayte. I think he hated all the scrutiny of his life in the public eye during that time period, and especially hated the whole world knowing about what was going on with his wife and child. Nowadays, he wants to keep things ultra-private, and that's cool. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. What if the NPGMC, the Celebration, and Paisley Park are now a part of his past? How would you feel? Does it even matter? Would you just wish him well? What if the end of 2002 meant the end of Prince as we have all come to know him? I'm interested in your thoughts. There are a lot of rumors floating around, I'm also wondering if anyone believes any of it. . Prince as we know him changed quite a bit over the past 3-4 years. Some people are kind of let down by the direction he's taken with his music, but thats all subjective. NPGMC I would rather do without, because at this point I don't have any confidence in his "experiments" anymore. P is notorious for giving up on projects halfway through, and it certainly felt like that with year 2 of NPGMC. Remember how active the Love4OneAnother site was with new news and information? Then compare that to year 1 of NPGMC. Not updated as much, but at least they posted new tracks every month. Then look at year 2 where they did virtually nothing to the site throughout the whole year and waited till the very last minute to send us the rest of our music. The technology exists nowdays to operate a dynamic musician web site with downloads, interactive content, a virtual storefront to sell music, discussion groups, etc. In the past several years it seemed Prince was interested in creating a web presence such as this to operate independently from major labels. But the end result was shoddy and half-hearted at best. Maybe he needed a bigger staff. Maybe he needed a more active role in the management of the site. Who knows. Fans already showed their "commitment" for two years at $100 per head each year. That includes the "naysayers" who joined in good faith and at the time hoped for the best with the club. Prince did try some new things over the past couple years such as the rehearsals, presales, and celebrations. But fans also paid greatly for them. If you spend $40,000 on a car you damn well better be drivin a Lexus. These were cash cows for Prince moreso than a kind attempt for him to reach out to his listeners. Yet we're the ones being called selfish. He's demanding more money from us, then we're gonna demand more and better music. It goes both ways.

XxAxX, I agree with elements of what you have to say but I also find elements of what Mr7 has to say compelling. That said, neither of you are exclusively 'right.' I certainly can understand Tom's point of view...
Regardless, NPGMC has offered unprecedented plus points to many fans (access to soundchecks and aftershows, for example) but predominantly functions as a means to reach fans when he is lacking inspiration himself i.e. as a next best call, he does what is necessary to satisify the fans (a piano album, a live album, for example). Prince's motives / inspiration for making music just aren't there right now and that's probably related to the rumours regarding new beliefs, new attitude, new lifestyle. The net effect is what's in question here and fans will almost always believe what they want to believe... . [This message was edited Wed Apr 2 11:33:17 PST 2003 by Anji]

I don't think he CAN stop making music.
I suppose he can stop releasing it, but I think he feels some need to get it out there. Music only lives when it's being listened to. It would be depressing to record it and then never have any of it heard. Is the NPGMC/Celly/MPLS thing over? Who knows. But I strongly suspect we'll be getting music from him until he dies (and I dearly hope that the vaults will be opened after that). And that's the important thing, right? Let's try to be patient.

Prince will continue to contribute to the world of music whether we see him or not. I said this before: just because Prince is "quiet" right now does not mean that the brother is "retired". He lives and is at peace with himself doin'what he wants to do. I wish him well, much love and peace.
He is a dynamite, talented brotha who has music flowing through his veins. I think he's listening and is revamping NPG. He will do what he wants. He is not obligated to give us anything more. I don't believe these rumors and I think thta he is getting a big laugh out of all the people running here and there 2002 was a blessing for me. Prince did a lot and definitely is entitled to a "rest"...peace and serenity of mind, body and soul. I personally think that he is doing many things...we will have to wait and see. Peace.

Wow - it's 3 months since we last got any new music from Prince. 3 months. There must be something wrong!!!
I like Seal. You know how long it is since Seal has put out an album? 4 years (or 5 - I don't even remember!). No-one has an output like Prince - NO-ONE! I think we forget this, take it for granted, and assume he must be dead/retired/moving since we haven't had any new music in THREE MONTHS! Come on, people!!!

What if the NPGMC, the Celebration, and Paisley Park are now a part of his past? How would you feel? So be it. Can't miss what I've never experienced. Besides, nothing lasts forever. Does it even matter? In the grand scheme of things, no. Would you just wish him well? Of course. What if the end of 2002 meant the end of Prince as we have all come to know him? I don't understand why people are making such a big deal out of him living in Toronto. He's going to keep making music and being who he is. If he decides to stop releasing the music, then I'll be happy with the music he's already given me.
