Purple Rain tour - God At the height of his career, Prince performed "God" during the Purple Rain tour and decided to make it the b-side of the "Purple Rain" single. Another example of how Prince was independent, unique and like no other when it came down to expressing his beliefs. That was bold. Wonder what Warner Brothers thought of that. Who would have done that? Madonna, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen? Our beloved Prince did that and much more. He consistently held on to his beliefs & stood his ground. How about the speeches he gave during the Lovesexy Tour? Regardless of whether we agree with his spiritual beliefs or not, he deserves respect for always proudly expressing his beliefs.

I really admired and respected Prince for standing up for what he believed regardless of what other people thought. He sure was special and one of a kind.

Admired Prince for always being true to himself. Not many people, let alone a celebrity can stay true to their beliefs. Another reason he was so special

The fact that he didn't care what anyone thought of him has always been as appealing to me as his music, style and persona. Come now, isn't life a little better with a pair of good shoes? - Prince 1985

Prince doing it doesn't make him unique, it makes him a great artist, like Madonna, Bruce, MJ, and others. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I admire and respect him for that too. I was just watching a video interview today or yesterday in which he talks about how it's best if artists don't try to "fit in". Tonight I'm watching Prince- The Glory Years. It's pretty good and clarifies some things I've heard accurately and gives a real inside look at his creating and the detauls of how various songs were written. He certainly did trust what needed to happen and made it happen because the music was coming from himmand he knew what needed to be done with it better than than anyone. I believe he was always spiritually seeking and growing spiritually. He said later on that he wrote "For You" for God. I love the song "God". It's beautiful and is a perfect expression of his spirituality and sexuality combined.

Are you saying that Bruce and Madonna were as bold as Prince in expressing their spiritual beliefs throughout their careers? Please post the lyrics of the songs that convey that from both Bruce & Madonna to compare that to Prince's bold expression of his spiritual beliefs. Many of us can share numerous examples by Prince. Let's see what Madonna & Bruce did to express their personal spirituality. It's also interesting how you take the opportunity to criticize him for the way he chose to express those views in concert. It's clear in videos of his concerts and commentary of fans worldwide that whenever he boldly expressed his strong spiritual beliefs, audiences were amazed and often times gave him standing ovations whether they agreed with him or not because of the passion he conveyed. This is why there is reluctance to post on this site because of all the negative and unjustified criticism of Prince.

P.S.: The lyrics to "God" were not included in the film "Purple Rain", yet that's the version he chose to release as a b-side to the song "Purple Rain" (not the instrumental version in the movie) & the bold version not in the film was the version he consistently sang in concert to standing ovations. Yet, you opted to leave that fact out of your commentary as you argued that he was not as bold & unique because others were doing it too... Looking forward to similar spiritual songs that Madonna & Bruce sing in concerts and have proudly released.

You are absolutely correct when saying that you can criticize anything you want. The problem is when you state a critique that is unsubstantiated & unjustifiable such as when you claim that the bold version of "God" with lyrics that Prince performed during the Purple Rain tour was in the "Purple Rain" movie. That is false. Prince deciding to perform the version with lyrics that was not in the movie and was the song he chose as the b-side of "Purple Rain" single was the example given as to why to some he was considered bold & unique. Misconstruing this fact weakens the merit of your critique. As you look up & post similar bold spiritual songs by Madonna & Bruce, I will listen to bold & unparalleled compositions by Prince such as "Still Would Stand on Time", "4 the Tears in Your Eyes", "God is Alive", "I Wish U Heaven" and many other unique gems that Madonna, Michael & Bruce would have never released nor performed nor written for others...

Prince was sincere in his boldness . He is the best. I know he is with God now [Edited 8/20/16 22:52pm] I asked Prince what he was planning to do. He told me , I'm going to look for the ladder. I asked him what that meant. All he said was, sometimes it snows in April. - book D.M.S.R.

I agree, he was incredibly bold and confident with his belief about God and the Scriptures.
Regarding Madonna, from what I remember it seemed she mocked religion rather than claiming it as a belief.
