I don't care what Apples said about Prince recognizing DLR doing the splits. You know why? Because he also mentioned the "greats" of the past and their stage presence and doing splits, toe touches and dancing on stage. Apples didn't know that history.

The Nicholas Brothers practically invented doing the "toe touches" in dance routins. And NOBODY, not MJ, not Prince, not James Brown himself, can dance like The Nicholas Brothers did.

Image result for nicholas brothers doing toe touches

Which reminds me of a great video I saw a few years ago on YT, it's called Jumpin Jive - Cab Calloway and the Nicholas Brothers, a must watch for all dance lovers (they start at about 1:30 but the whole video and music is excellent).

That video is from the part when The Nicholas Brothers was dancing to the song in the movie "Stormy Weather" biggrin

i wouldn't be surprised if he got the idea from either. Prince was so eclectic he came up with stuff from all over the place and even his own crazy moves.

and i still want to see jackie wilson doing this move or the splits. somehow, people think he did the splits but in all my watching him, i never saw him once do the splits. He did a move where he drops down and lands on one hand and jumps back, not a split.

I said that it was my mistake about Jackie Wilson doing those toe touches. I said that in one of my posts.

I'm going to leave this particular issue alone because I feel my blood boiling. Don't get me wrong, David Lee Roth was one of the best in doing the toe touches BUT Prince did not start doing them because of DLR. That was my only point.

He has mentioned before some of the people who has inspired him regarding his stage performances.

And NO I don't have links to where he has said this. neutral

oh sorry, didn't see that, wasn't trying to argue, actually am genuinely curious because i've read in several sources that wilson did the splits but i've never seen it. I had seen that pic of brown before somewhere, and brown was probably the best of the musician-dancers. I saw an old interview of his saying he had a bum leg, i wonder what the hell he meant by that.

it is such a light weight fun discussion....

I'll look for some Wilson splits

maybe from the Minneapolis Cheerleaders or cheerleaders lol

Apollonia quote is good enough 4 me and the timeline of him doing them.

I missed this discussion:http://prince.org/msg/7/413804

3. Both acts released their biggest selling albums ever in 1984.

4. Both acts had two of the biggest tours in 1984.

5. According to Ian Christe David Lee Roth was dating Patricia Kotero (Apollonia) at the time she was cast in Purple Rain. Prince made her break-up with him to maintain the image and illusion that she was his true girlfriend throughout the period. - The Van Halen Saga

6. David Lee Roth was among the select guests to attend the listening party for Around In The World In A Day at the WB offices in New York.

7. Prince began doing the jumping splits, or Russians, like DLR after Van halen became staples of MTV. P also started doing the high-kicks on the Hit-N-Run Tour which were DLR trademarks.

How do you feel about people calling the record "psychedelic"?

I don't mind that, because that was the only period in recent history that delivered songs and colors. Led Zeppelin, for example, would make you feel differently on each song.

So yesterday there were a couple of threads about Prince concerts/performances on YT and it got me to thinking.... I started watching some of the 80s rock videos that were on heavy rotation on mtv. It made me think about P, and who of these groups he may have liked/listened to. There was some good stuff out there at that time.

Who do you think he may have been a 'fan' of?

I once heard he listened and watched Queen concerts a lot in the eighties.

i wouldn't doubt it, when i first saw bohemian rhapsody and pics of mercury in that heavy mascara i thought prince had watched him.
