Who or what was the song "Guitar" about?

"Guitar"

(Oh Yeah)

Yeah
Uh uh

U're gettin dirty at the club again
I'm usually round Ur waist like a chain but then,
I got that call so I jumped in my car
I love U baby,
But not like I love my guitar

Uh uh, not like I love my guitar, no

U couldn't do it all by Urself
U had 2 go and get somebody else
Ur high enough to call me
But U can't reach the bar
I love U baby
But not like I love my guitar, no
Not like I love my guitar

Oh, listen
Turn it up

Uh uh

[guitar solo]

Yeah, now dig

I tried 2 warn U that it's hard 2 B a star
Especially when Ur driving other people's car
I woulda gave U mine, girl, but U took it 2 far
I love U baby
But, just not like I love my guitar
Uh uh, not like I love my guitar

Oh

I know U love me and U wanna B friends
And if U don't at least U need 2 pretend
We're still 2gether even if we don't get that far
I love U baby
But not like I love this guitar

I love U, I love U baby
(Not like I love my guitar)

I love U baby and I wish U well (I wish U well)
I'll write a letter when I learn how 2 spell
Until that day, U can go to the... [laugh]
I love U baby.... U know the rest

Aah aah aah

_____

Sounds like he's talking bout a female or two, can someone explain this to me?

I imagined it was about his wife at the time the song was recorded and how he would choose music over her. "I love you but not like I love my guitar".
Also, the bit about it being hard to be a star. Perhaps she struggled with the attention of being married to a big celebrity?
And "you need to pretend we're still together even if we don't get that far" might be indicative of a sexless marriage that is held together for publicity's sake.

Then again, I could be way off and it might be something completely different. smile

had to be mani, she fits the timeline and women, (sorry to offend you) aren't happy unless they have you totally controlled. My guess is, she overstepped her bounds at some point in a big way, which had to be pretty dramatic because, well prince used to not even be reachable by Mayte. As a musician I understand, music first, everyone else second.

they would have been living apart for sometime by then. i never understood that line about "if we don't get that far". it struck me as odd. i wonder who became his assistant after MT got her "promotion". their relationship was obviously different from P and MG. i'm sure MT could call P until he decides he didn't want to hear from her anymore. and MT was never aparty girl was she?

he had some strange arrangement with mayte that she couldn't call him, that he would call her. I understand the man though, I turn off my phone, don't even look at texts until after practice and people get pissed, sorry but fuck you, music first.

i think there was talk about Fury being about Mani too at the time. But most people thought it was about Wendy and Lisa, don't see why he'd sing that song some 20 years after the fact though.

understandable. i studied music form 4th grade thru my 1st yr of uni. the practice rooms were a return to the womb, so to speak, and usually necessary at different times during the semester. it had been piano and voice. for the last 10yrs it's been guitar. but i haven't touched anything since P died. it sounds melodramatic but with him and bowie gone i feel like my creative life is over. maybe just for now.

that's how I felt, i didn't practice for a month and told people "my leader is gone" but I'm back into the groove now. Don't take too much time off, the longer you're away the harder it is to get back. When my ma died it was different, practice was really the only place i could go to deal with it (along with my old martial arts training), with prince it was the opposite but it was similar in that it felt like losing family.
