We discussed this song in another thread under Prince's Saddest songs. Maybe it is a gender thing but the loneliness and desperation in this song break my heart. Instead of him waiting to be more intimate with his girl I find it to be a lot darker.

I agree. If I was your girlfriend always sounded sad and dark to me. Although the little dance Prince and Cat did together at the end of this song on the SOTT movie always looked erotic and intimate. On that big mirrored heart....

"Do Me Baby" is too litteral.
Sounds like a seventies porn movie soundtrack (a very good soundtrack nonetheless).

The metaphors in "International Lover" are also blatantly explicit, but it's the Jazz Club feeling of it,
the piano stabs, these fake take-offs, during which
the whole climax slowly builds up, to the final orgasmic explosion ("Tee-hee! Tee-hee!"),
way more potent in the way it resolves compared to "Do Me Baby".

It's in the way it's played. Musically, it's really sexual.

I hear "Adore" as being about love, not necessarily sex.

"I Love U In Me" maybe, but the surgery line kills it for mostly everyone.


I would also vote for a handful of the "Purple Rain" introes :
"The Beautiful Ones", the drum pattern only exsudes sex.
Same goes for "Computer Blue" and "Darling Nikki",
but they're more obvious.


The strength of "International Lover" is in it can also serve as background music for making love,
whereas I would personally be too distracted by the "Beautiful Ones" vocal ad lib,
or by the Blue Angel moanings on "The Rapture"...

...or I'd be having the grandest orgasm of them all, who knows.

I mean it's like your partner has to fit the music, right?
