The War/ NYC Live

The book Funk by Dave Thompson lists (among others) two 1998 official archive releases from Prince: The War and NYC Live.

Anyone know more about these?

Just to add, the War is a 20 minute or so slow live ramble about living under the Earth and microchips in your neck.

Actually, I like it a lot more now than I did when I first got it.

The NYC live tape has 'Jam of the Year' followed by 'Face Down'.

Which is not so much of a ramble when you understand that "living under the Earth with a microchip in your neck" is a metaphor for living in Satan's world having accepted the mark of the Beast.

Yes, you're right... That's so much more not a ramble...

Well, since the definition of 'to ramble' is 'to go on and on without getting to the point' and since the point seems to be '"living under the Earth with a microchip in your neck" is a metaphor for living in Satan's world having accepted the mark of the Beast' which he never actually states, you could argue he never actually gets to the point, therefore he is rambling. Erpso Ipso Facto.

Well, that's what the microchip in my neck told me to write, and I always obey my microchip...

I got the point of the song rather quickly, so it was not a ramble for me. As far as him coming outright and stating what the metaphor signifies, when did he ever say who Spooky Electric was? Or the "Elevator" in "Let's Go Crazy"? Does he need to spell everything out or can we use our power of inference?

Yeah, but they weren't 20 minute songs. A ramble implies 'a long time spent not getting to the point'. I'm only defending my choice of the word 'ramble' and am not attacking Prince's right to use metaphors in his work. You obviously got the point very quickly, I assume you didn't bother listening to the last 10 minutes?! It was just filler I guess.

Ok, how about a compromise, I'll let you keep the word "ramble" if you admit that the song was not "about living under the Earth and microchips in your neck." lol
.
tryna get the emoticoncode right...

Okay, fair enough. The War is a 20 minute or so slow live ramble NOT about living under the Earth and microchips in your neck.

And here are the lyrics for those listening in:

1,2 the evolution will be colorized

I can't hear u say it
Y'all ain't ready I can't hear u say it
The evolution will be colorized
This is the war...right on
The war will go on and on and on
If u don't wanna miss your saturday morning cartoons
1,2 the evolution will be colorized
1,2 the evolution will be colorized
Yeah...right on
Y'all niggas is bad
The war will go on and on
The revolution will be
The revolution will be
The revolution will be on and on and
The war will go on and on
If u do not wish to be in the war u should leave now
We are about to challenge what you believe
If u do not wish to be challenged u should leave now, Saturday morning awaits
Do u love your country
Do u love your country
Do u love God
Do u love your country as much as u love God
If the government
If the government
If the government wants to put a microchip in your neck...right on
Do u still love your country
The war will go on and on
If u do not wish to be challenged leave now
The evolution will be colorized
The evolution will be colorized
We are running out of the essentials of life:
Oxygen, water, food, fertile earth
Underground right now as we speak there is a metropolis
awaiting, waiting... for u and me
With clean air, food to eat, will u go, will u go...
Will u go underground to this metropolis, this metropolis paradise
We are running out of the essentials of life here on earth
Will u go, will u go, will u go
Don't u love your country
If your country no longer exist on this earth
But exist under this earth will u go
Underneath in the metropolis there's food to eat, clean air it's a paradise
One condition...microchip in your neck
1, 2 the evolution will be colorized
Right on
Would u stay above the metropolis the microchip city
Would u stay above and await your fate
Do u trust your god
Would you stay on top of the chip and await your fate
Tonight u will be challenged u best leave now
The war will go on and on
1,2 the evolution will be colorized
1,2
1,2 the evolution will be colorized
Without god there is no country
Without god there is no metropolis
Without god there is no oxygen
Without god there is no food to eat
Without god there is no chocolate microchip for your neck
Somebody say it
1,2 the evolution will be colorized
In other words they'll be a little bit of u and a little bit of me
1,2 the evolution will be colorized
The evolution will be colorized
The evolution will be colorized
1 for me 2 for u
U preach a lie not the truth
U give me candy and keep the gold
Gonna' eat it. in the war
Batter up
Pitcher down
What your teacher say it ain't down
Pledge allegiance to your flag
U tie me to a truck...then u drag
1 for me 2 for u
U preach a lie not the truth
U give me candy u keep the gold
Gonna eat it in the war
U give me AIDS your history when it comes 2 find
Another day many die and this is true
Red black yellow even Jew
Claimin' god was backin' u on a cross what a fool
1 for me 2 for u
U preach a lie not the truth
U give me candy and keep the gold
Gonna eat it in the war
Shall I go on
So u say u got a cure
HIV I'm not sure
Every seed fruit to bare
The great babylon I don't care
We know your name it's the beast
All of gods child is your beef
When the righteous one plants the seed
No more kids with mama bleed
Only way to get there is the truth y'all
In the war it's 'bout me and u
Come on
1,2 the evolution will be colorized
1,2
1,2 the evolution will be colorized
1,2
1,2 the evolution will be colorized
Play your organ son
1 for me 2 for u
U preach a lie not the truth
U give me candy u keep the gold
What the hell is goin' on y'all
There's a mountain mighty high
Can't reach the top unless u fly
Ain't about the money `bout the gold
Whatever century money just got sold y'all
If ya hear me
Money just got sold y'all
Check the yen
It's has been
It's all gone
Your pocket book is next
'bout the gold y'all
1,2 the evolution will be colorized
1,2 the evolution
1,2 the evolution
the evolution will be
the evolution...will be...colorized

1,2 the evolution will be colorized

In its released edited dubbed format - the orginal performance of the song at Paisley Park lasted for approximately 40 minutes

Love the "1,2..." refrain and the whole song has such a laid back vibe.

Beleive it or not here in Orange County I heard on the news that a woman and her daughter surgically had chips implanted in there bodys which reveal their medical backgrounds.

There are a few differences that I hear in

the lyrics:

1 for me 2 for u
U preach a lie not the truth
U give me candy and keep the store
Gonna' get it in the war

(As in you retain ownership of the means of production and distribution while giving out token compensation... an iniquity to be righted in the war... a recurring theme for Prince)

Batter up
Pitcher down
What your teacher say, it ain't found
Pledge allegiance to your flag
U tie me to a truck...then u drag...

U give me AIDS
Your history
When it comes 2 mine, another day...

Every seed fruit to bear
The great babylon I don't care
We know your name it's the beast
All of gods child is your feast
When the righteous one plants the seed
No more tears will mama bleed

(A reference to the Book of Revelations prophecy of the woman in wilderness pregnant with the Son of Man while the Dragon/beast attempts to devour her)

It ain't about the money, it's about the gold
Twentieth century money just got sold y'all

(Referencing the shift away from the gold standard as the basis for measuring a currency's worth in the early 1900s, which many people identify as introducing instability in the economy)
"That...magic, the start of something revolutionary-the Minneapolis Sound, we should cherish it and not punish prince for not being able to replicate it."-Dreamshaman32
