We know Prince has said a few phrases in foreign dialects in various songs, at various times throughout his career. However, we also know for FACT, Prince traveled extensively, throughout his career, too! Like so many rock stars, Prince travelled the world, but he wasn't exactly a backpacker who stays in hostels and eats at local food stalls. Like his fellow rock stars, Prince stayed in the rock star bubble. If he played in Germany, he really didn't have to speak German. When rock stas are touring, they're living in this world of hotels, arenas, nightclubs and groupies.

However, we also know for FACT, Prince traveled extensively, throughout his career, too! Well he toured Japan numerous times but who knows if he could speak some Japanese or not. I get a feeling he picked up common phrases like "hello, thankyou" etc but was not fluent in anything other than English. However, we don't know for sure how good his French or Spanish was. Some people pick up other languages easily and others don't. If he needed to he probably got some hot chick to interpret whichever language it was. [Edited 8/17/16 14:57pm] Baby, you're a star.

Based on his pronunciation of the french phrases he uttered, it is very unlikely he actually spoke it. It sounded very much like those other american singers that record in other languages (Nat King Cole comes to mind, and many Motown artists). The words are there, but the phonics are simply way off. . As an aside.. I love how in the US "bilingual" is seen as a positive, whereas in the Netherlands (and quite a few other countries) it is looked down upon. "Only two languages?" . Having said that.. I still have to learn Urdu, my wife's language. Can't find a good instructor. (So I'm stuck with only 4 languages) Paisley Park is in your heart - Love Is Here!

Most Americans only speak English fluently. Nothing I've heard/seen suggests Prince spoke another language with proficiency. This. It's never been a matter of importance in the US to learn other languages which seems unfortunate. Every foreign exchange student I knew of during high school - Japanese, German, Mexican, Swedish - could speak english and reported that it was the norm to be taught English in the schools in their countries. It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN

I think if he could have spoken other languages, he'd have dropped a bit of it on record occasionally & shown off a little 😛 So I agree with the others - proficient in English & Pussy.

I'd hope saying he was proficient would be doing his linguistic skills a disservice... Not like I love my guitar....

It can certainly be useful if your partner's family doesn't speak English, but if your partner does speak English fluently there isn't a need per se--although it's beautiful to make that effort to try and learn his/her language

Prince has done interviews in many countries. He always spoke English. If he spoke French and the interview was for a French audience then why would he speak English? He wouldn't.

I don´t see him spending time learning another languages. Although geminis are curious about everything and usually speaks more languages I guess he spent all his time with music and love sign

I've often wondered about this myself (probably due to being a linguist and English not being my mother tongue). I think he was linguistically interested, given that he used foreign language fragments in his songs quite regularly and also due to being a Gemini. However, I also don't think he knew more than a few French phrases and probably a few more in Spanish. As others said, foreign language proficiency isn't particularly common in the States, there wasn't any need for him to learn a language and, as far as we know, he wasn't particularly academic. So, yes, I also can't see him spending any time on learning languages.

Mayte was born and raised in the US. I did see a video of Prince and I think the NPG or some band members he was touring with at the time, doing a show then interview in a French-speaking country (I forget which one), and he seems to understand what is being said to him in French and so did some band members, and they answered questions in English I believe, but I couldn't tell if they were actually understanding the French or not. Saw it a while back; it's from the early 90s maybe. Your friend might've seen that too and hence his/her question.
