Gender is a question of numbers. If the majority of a certain gender have a certain response (as opposed to a smaller number of the other gender) then gender has got something to do with it...which was the original provocation. Not like I love my guitar....

There are lots of women who don't think he's all that, but not many fans. And I think it matters, not because we think men shouldn't be attracted to him, but because the recognition of the experience of women as a group (and especially the sexual experience of women as a group) matters...and women talking about it matters... I'm not reaching, it's just structural analysis. But I agree it is defintely killing the hotness. Not like I love my guitar....

interesting thread. . it's impressive to see how much IMPACT Prince has had - & continues to have - on people of all ages & backgrounds. especially, however, the impact on women "of a certain age".. (I was a little surprised someone in this thread described themself as "middle age".. 1 thing I like about following these so-called "baby boomers" is that these "baby boomers" never get old! e.g. "40 is the new 35" & "50 is the new 40" etc.. if the "boomers" never get old, then I - as a so-called "generation x" type will never get old either..! ok, I can live with that.. but I digress..) . myself: I am - & have always been - a heterosexual male. I have always thought that Prince was a good-looking man. I can (& could always) understand how Prince's look/"blatant sexuality"/etc could make a woman.. uh.. "moist".. he had this confidence, this audacity. I believe this came from the fact that he knew he was so uniquely & supremely musically talented. in other words, he could (musically) back up his mentality, his attitude, his "in-your-face" sexuality ("Dirty Mind" era). it was impressive, & fascinating to watch. . it was a special experience for me, a life-changing experience for me to be 12 years old when DIRTY MIND came out.. & to just be hitting puberty. that was a.. volatile mix, to say the least. I am so thankful that I was around & old enough to appreciate THE BEST of what Prince had to offer. not just musically, but in terms of his approach to life: . be who you are. trust your instincts. do what you were put on this earth to do. . I would say that Prince did all that. & then some. & he looked great doing it. . I am coming out of a long-term relationship, & that has been a.. process. in order to get back to the person I was (before this relationship) I am.. revving up to "channel my inner Prince". . that should be interesting..
I'll see you tonight..

I think this is really interesting question, but the gay men I know generally love Prince, and don't seem to fancy him...and on the basis of this totally unscientific survey I'm going to make up a theory anyway... I think what women really respond to in P (other than the general unspeakable beautifulness), is the fact that he is totally identified with female desire and female pleasure...if we think about the whole guitar orgasm thing...that is not a male orgasm he is reproducing...and he knew exactly what he was doing...there is that interview from guitar magazine sometime in the nineties when they asked him what a perfect guitar tone should sound like and his answer was 'a woman in climax,' and there is another story about him telling one of his band mates that stage performance was like making love, particularly with regard to paying attention to what makes you partner respond, in order to control their climax. What he communicated, with almost every damn movement, was a really deep connection to what women want and what women feel...and he managed to do it without compromising his masculinity in the slightest (he used a load of feminine aesthetic gestures, but I don't think of P as effeminate at all, he was way too hardbodied and assertive and cocky)...and that's what really gets to us (especially b/c men indicating that they're really interested in our pleasure is really rare...so much of supposed male seduction seems to be about what they want from us rather than what they want to do for us), and also, I think it might well be why it doesn't really seem to do it for gay men in the same way... makes sense..he sure knew how to seduce women..the VJ whisperer. However no matter how sexy he was, he was still a dog! Can you imagine how frustrating it must have been to have him as a boyfriend? Every woman in the world wanted him, and he often went for it. I'd have to cut a bitch! ..Hello, who is it?
Yes, this is a prettyman, Princey!

Yup, the VJ whisperer indeed And yes, he would have been a total nightmare...I'm super scorpionic (like P was), and I do about as well with men being unfaithful as he did with his women being unfaithful (too much with the double standards there for my liking)...and still, if I'd been the right kind of woman in the right place and time, I'm pretty sure my capacity to say no would have been less than zero...so that would have worked out great... My son is just starting to feel the signs of puberty and I know that was why he asked me what I thought about Prince and why I was crying. He has seen his 3 movies and many performance dvd's and heard him speak in interviews. He knew Prince was special and that he had "it", he just isn't quite sure what "it" is yet. Prince has brought my son to tears as well since his death. I'm glad we can share his music and life lessons (both good and bad), if he wants to take his cues from our man I'm perfectly ok with that.
Oh and yeah power to your inner Prince! "Give me back the time, you can keep the memories"

Yes, the gay men that I know seem to feel the same way. They love him but are not attracted to him in that way. Of that doesn't mean that every gay man feels like that. Prince most certainly did master the perfect guitar tone for me! 432hz "Give me back the time, you can keep the memories"

I think women responded to Prince because he either really believed (or acted really well) that every woman was beautiful, and that he wanted/desired/lusted after every woman, no matter what her shape or size, skin color or anything else. Prince was the kind of man you could say to: "Honey, just lie there ... I'll do all the work!" It was carnal to the Nth degree.

I was thinking about this very thing last night while spinning Vibrator. As a guy, there have been many times during my music listening career where I thought damn, that is a great lyric but it most definitely means more to a woman. When that happens, it's always a song written or sung by a women. A quick example would be Le Tigre. Their overall theme applies to everyone, but undeniably there are lyrics that speak directly to the experience of being a woman that can't necessarily be enitrely empathized by a man. And then there's Prince . I just don't hear many male artists being able to place themselves into a head space of the opposite sex so effectively.

it's GREAT that you & your son can share the experience of Prince's powerful music. . I distinctly remember being 12 years old (in the fall of 1980) & being in that old "Harmony Hut" record store in Richmond.. I had heard UPTOWN - & had been totally rocked by it - so now I wanted to buy the Dirty Mind album. 1 potential problem, though: that "not safe for radio play" sticker on the upper right front of the vinyl album (the sticker didn't say that, verbatim, but the intent was that Dirty Mind had some "obscene stuff" on it. I knew my dad - himself a musician - was NOT going to buy an album of a man.. in make-up.. wearing a trench coat.. AND "bikini briefs".. fortunately for me on that day.. in the back of the stack of Dirty Mind albums was ONE DM album that DID NOT have that "WARNING!" sticker on it. I quickly presented THAT copy of DM to my dad. he still studied the front cover.. he still asked me "why do you want to buy this? are you SURE you want to buy this record???" I said YES DAD! the MUSIC on here is great! (I clearly wanted to emphasize MUSIC) & the rest was history..! . my 8-year old daughter isn't really into Prince yet, but she recognizes his music/his songs when she hears them. she likes 1999 the most so far, I'd say. she actually likes The Time more than Prince right now: when we play/dance to 777-9311, my daughter - in sync with the music - pretends to "slap" her face at that part in the song! she also loves THE WALK.. & of course THE BIRD.. I'll see you tonight..
