Did Prince ever comment on Karlen's flippant comments?

No, I don't think he did either. But he survived it, and in so many ways, totally magnificently. Not like I love my guitar....

It was so few days before he passed, I don't think so...I just hope to God he didn't ever hear them. Not like I love my guitar....

maybe it was just one of those performance/church kind of questions "did you hear me?" "i don't believe you heard me" but ya, i wonder about it too. It's been said that Elvis died friendless, in many ways it's true, the people who will fight tooth and nail to ingratiate themselves to someone in that position aren't the best of people. The good people you have to pretty much look for on your own. I've been wondering lately too, as I look back over my life "have I really ever had a friend?" I don't think so. Maybe Prince felt the same way.

I remember at my b-day parties when I was little, thinking I had a lot of friends. I’m guessing they were more like acquaintances. Now I have someone I go to dinner with occasionally, but that’s it. It’s hard to make real friends, especially when you aren’t in school. And I'm so introverted, the thought of going out and meeting people just exhausts me.
That being said, I know plenty of people with boyfriends/girlfriends/spouses that are lonely.
Being Prince, I'm sure he took every relationship he had with a grain of salt and he got burned plenty of times. I don't think fans are friends. Everyone has an agenda.

what were karlen's flippant comments? I probably heard but refresh my memory. I also ain't sure about the "I love you man" stories, don't see why an artist would call a journalist and say some shit like that, but then, i don't trust journalist much more than prince did.

2 things... 1) I just saw a clip from Lopez where P's in red and showing George Lopez a yellow guitar. When George asks if P had others, P sorta smiles sadly and says something like, "No, people steal from me." 2) I read an old interview from Rolling Stone magazine where the interviewer drove with P to pick up his Dad to play pool on his Dad's birthday. P's driving his Dad's white 1966 Thunderbird (from the Alphabet video) and his Dad's carefully driving the purple BMW that P got him for a previous birthday). Anyway, earlier P takes the interviewer around to the neighborhood he grew up in and then to the modest purple split level house with the recording studio, behind the gates with the heart/peace sign. The one that was later torn down. So, fame and money were still fairly new and P was still young and trying to live in a step up from regular life. Like imagine how you live right now and you think that if you can live in your house, but upgrade a few things, keep living the way you live but get a car that runs better, buy a few toys. That's sad cuz of where he was in life, but he mentioned how he wished his friends (which would be old friends from childhood and his bandmates up to the 1999 era at this point) would visit much more, but he felt that they felt they were bothering him but that he missed them. I was SOBBING. That was before PR, before PP, and he already was behind a gate with security because he said more aggressive fans would come by and be buzzing the bell or driving past, blaring his music. He said he didn't mind fans dropping by but his neighbors would complain about the disturbance cuz even though it was a nice area, it was as a regular neighborhood and the houses weren't really far away from each other. The interviewer said P was a good neighbor. The whole thing made me nauseous. Here he was, a young guy just trying to live his dream, only to find himself already lonely and cut off from his regular life. I can only imagine how much worse it all got the more famous/rich he got. That's how someone becomes a legendary icon...and dies alone in an elevator in their home compound. It makes me sad and angry for him. [Edited 8/12/16 0:48am]

Neal Karlen is in possession of handwritten letters from Prince. His comment in an interview was - I am paraphrasing - that the letters would be worth a lot of money once Prince died. Shortly thereafter, Prince was gone and NK was guilt-stricken at having even joked like that. What has stuck in my mind, however, was NK's column after Prince died, and his first statement that he hoped Prince was dead before he hit the elevator floor, because the one thing Prince was afraid of was dying alone. And we all know that is what happened.

Just found this. It's heartbreaking. Even ignoring the columnist, how could you trash someone on the radio?

This resonates too. With Prince gone, I'm watching the last naiveté of my youth disappear--it reminds me of a toddler when they accidently release a helium balloon. It's sort of like...what just happened?

It was a really crass thing to say, but I kind of get it, it was an obvious joke to make, so he made it...and I think even as he said it he realized it was crass and he shouldn't be saying it. I kind of feel a bit bad for him really, because the timing was so terrible, and when P passed Neal was mortified. I do think he really respected P, and had genuine sympathy with him...the two RS articles are probably two of the best interviews/profiles ever, P clealry came to trust him, and felt Neal had represented him well...which is why I just hope he ever ever heard that interview... Not like I love my guitar....

Q: What is that thing with Prince about making people wait for him? A: Because he can. What was his junior high? He’d walk down the hallways wearing women’s bikini underwear and a raincoat. He never changed.
He never wore bikini's in junior high, what is he talking about here?

There is no one like him, no heirs; his artisty will never be matched. His music moved me and...Well..I'm middle age, my kids are grown, divorced, no significant other and basically Prince was the hot rich bad boy musician that I would have loved to hook up with and I lost my chance..very sad.. ..Hello, who is it?
Yes, this is a prettyman, Princey!

.... ...girl I'm with ya! Back in my teens and 20s I totally wanted to get down with P like that... .... not saying that was realistic, (just another fangirl in the crowd but hey a girl can dream! ) although now my fantasy was more, like it would have been cool just working for him in some capacity or have been a buddy...lol...can you imagine all that you would have learned working for a creative genius?? Just to be around all that creative energy in talent. I know some people hated working for P but I think it would have been a great adventure. I had a dream recently, that I worked for him at PP and my whole family was so proud of me! They knew what a big fan I was and it was sorta like my "dream job". [Edited 8/12/16 12:58pm]
